shipping a bike to AZbarfy

Does anyone have any advice about shipping a mountain bike? I'm from Virginia and I'm going to Arizona in January - flying US Air. Also, if you're in Scottsdale - got any recommendations on local shops or who to hook up with who knows the local trails.? I am an IMBA member.
Thanks.

As far as shipping I have friends who are on an adventure racing team and have to ship their bikes all over the country via airlines. They use cargo cases which can be purchased through most of the major online cycle stores.

For trails, in Scottsdale you will be sitting on top of some great trails. Pima and Dynamite is a great area with over 100 miles of single track through a network of trails. It is just north of Scottsdale a few miles. To the east of Scottsdale between Fountain Hills and Rio Verde, there is the McDowell Mountain Park which has the Pemberton Trail (a 15.3 mile loop- easy) as well as competition trails- Sport, Tech and Long loops- more good riding.

On bike shops I have been happy with Excellent Bikes- they are in Phoenix west of I-17 on Bell Road but worth the drive. Hope you have a great visit.

If you take a bike case to the airport, be prepared to pay anywhere from $45 up each way for an oversize package. Also the hassle of lugging it to and from the airport can be major. If you can, take the case to the air freight terminal and ship it a few days ahead of time, either to a bike shop or a friend in the area. It's cheaper than UPS air.

For rides, hook up with the ride-az egroup on topica. They have something going most weeknights and weekends, plus occasional weekday rides. They can also steer you to good shops.

If you can swing south, check out the ride calendar at http://www.sdmb.org for more options.
