worst ever mtbr coverage on interbike(18 posts)

worst ever mtbr coverage on interbikecodi
Oct 18, 2003 1:36 PM
Last year was close to as bad with tons of pics of the mtbr people partying and no BIKE coverage till the end, after a good flaming by the people.

This year has toped that as worst ever, its just pathetic compared to what mtbr did years ago, they used to have way more photos.

And the virtual booths are just ad's with the company's sales pitch (how many claimed to be lightest or the best in there ad,about all of them)

Then Dean not even being at the show gets a virtual booth too !!

The show coverage blows, and is nothing but a sponsored AD, its all about the payoff to even see bikes.

Another once great web site has bit the dust.
100% agree...stump

It's hard to find any quality coverage anywhere. NSMB and Pinkbike are hardly any better than this, with very selective can sporadic coverage.

About the best I have found so far is http://www.hcor.net/modules.php?name=gallery I only had a brief look around, but there are certainly more photos there.

...why don't all you little whiners go ask Francis for your money back for the poor coverage?? Oh, wait a minute, that's right, this coverage is all FREE! Mtbr provides all this coverage to us, and it costs us nothing. Imagine that.

Or maybe you guys prefer waiting for two months so you can see 2 dozen photos in the magazines?! I'm willing to wait a couple more days, then check back here, and all the other sites.

And by the way, it doesn't cost to browse other sites too! Wow, what a totally cool, concept. I can go to pinkbike or nsmb or hcor, and check out all of there coverage for free.

And some people are complaining about seeing the booth babes?! What's up with that? They're hired to promote the product and they know sex sells, it's nothing new. Why complain? Just enjoy it, or don't click on those pics.

Sheesh.

(I will agree that there are too many pics of that fugly Jericho "bike")
well..... let's apply some gray matter.jimBobby

If the goal of MTBR Interbike coverage is to cover the development and status of the bicycle industry during the last year, then yes the coverage provided by MTBR is a bit on the weak side. Regardless of whether or not we have to pay for it.

Remember, what is the goal of this endeavor and how successfully was it accomplished? It should be good coverage no matter how it is funded. Got it?
Not exactly freeSabine

I am by no means condoning the whining. I know all too well how difficult it is to cover such an event.

On the other hand, the coverage is not "free" to us as there are ads all over these pages. We "pay" to view the pics by accepting the fact that there are ads on both the sidebars and in pop ups.
you "pay" MTBR because you look at ads??r_cello
Oct 23, 2003 8:13 AM
I don't know, sounds kinda like shakey logic to me. I don't see how you could consider yourself as "paying" MTBR just because you see ads on the site. Do you "pay" Mountain Bike magazine because you look at the ads?

Now, if you click on one of MTBR's banners or ads, then I could see how that might be consider as a form "payment". Or if you actually "buy" something from one of the advertisers on the website or magazine, that to is a form of payment. But the simple act of just seeing ads, I don't think it helps keep the server on.

And j.b, who ever proclaimed that MTBR's goal is to "cover the development & status of the bicycle industry"? What a lofty load, indeed. What if their purpose is to provide the average mtn. bike (like you and me, presumably) a glimpse into an industry only tradeshow, and show us stuff that we wouldn't normally see for months?

And codi, to answer your question, I've seen MTBR coverage since about 2000, and I don't see a heck of a lot of difference. I'm basing my opinion on what I see here and now (on this site and pinkbike and hcor and ridemonkey, etc.)

And I'm not saying that everyone is whining, but there sure is a lot of it, and, I recall, there always is for the past couple of years. Can't please everyone.

But kissing? No. Just setting realistic expectations.

Expectations are higher for an advertised supported site. MTBR is in the business of providing this information as evidenced by the revenue that is generated by advertisement. This is not a community service run by volunteers, this is the business they are in and as such expectations are higher.
Of course we payMikeS

when looking at advertisements, with out time. Just like with television ads. Duh.

So ANYTHING that doesn't kiss A$$ is whining.

Let me get this right, so all the Democrats are currently whiners.
All eco people too.
Gaundi must be a whiner too.
Martin luther king would also be i guess.

AND....you are whining about my post too, you should ask me for your time back since you read my post and all the others that didn't kiss A$$.

Do you work for mtbr, or are you such a newbi that you didn't see how Mtbr did interbike years ago, wayyyyyyyyyyy better.
well, yes and no.holycow

Yes and no, I'm thinking. Admittedly, I'm guilty -- I whined a bit myself. The previous post makes a few good (if obvious) points: this coverage is free to us visitors, and no doubt, the MTBR guys are likely working fairly hard to pull the whole thing together.

For that much, they deserve a bit of a break, and a thank you.

On the other hand, the criticism is still somewhat warranted. Something about the coverage headlines and advertisments, for instance, has lead us to believe that the coverage has shorter lead-time than it does. The conference goes on for a few days, and as the days go by, the tag line "DAILY COVERAGE" suggests that some substance will be materialzing as the show goes on, with at least a handful of new photos each day. Too much to ask? Maybe, but easy to expect given the copy around here.

In the end, I think that MTBR and other sites covering multi-day shows should probably be upfront, ahead of time, as to what site visitors should expect. Explain early on that you'll be holding back the bulk of your coverage for a week or two, and I think no one will be upset. Otherwise, you've got a bunch of angry downhillers chomping at the bit, feeling ripped-off by a free service, convincing themselves they've been mislead or deceived.

My thoughts. Thanks for the work you've done; good luck with upcoming show and race coverage. Oh, and post more Klein custom paint schemes.

:)
so, why we buy mtbr jerseys, shorts....?? nmstump

And thanks for the input on expectations and the "Daily Coverage" suggestion. I think you may have hit on something there. Let me just say it is NOT our intention to falsely mislead anyone, and I can personally vouch that we DID update the photos in the gallery daily, every evening from our Hotel room.

Partying? Heck, I stayed in two nights and ordered room service. Went out one night to the IMBA bowling party and that was it. Didn't even get to gamble at all (all the better probably)!

Perhaps we are too picky on our images, and should just upload a ton more pics with less concern about image quality or product info. I'm thinking of just opening up a "Interbike Public Gallery" or something to that effect, and offering swag (MTBR socks, T-shirts, etc...) next year, for people that want to upload their own pics.

More Pics coming!

bad coverage compared to the reststiingya
Oct 24, 2003 10:12 PM
If all the various freeride and hucking websites were able to do a good job covering there end of the interbike show with plenty of good coverage of the new drop rigs. Than I think it is not being whiny to expect mtbr to do the same for the rest of us mountain bikers especially when they have done so in the past, And most importantly promoted themselves to be doing the same this year.

The coverage we got was like what one would expect from dirt rag or something. Very eclectic? lots of small frame builders, which are good to see, but ALONG with the rest of the major bike companies too. It just doesn't seem like the usual type of coverage, or veiw point we are used to see comming from mtbr.com. Pinkbike has over seven hundred photo's from IB. MTBR.com has what 90 bike shots in the gallery, and then whatever more there are in the vr tradeshow booth?

Still a lot of work to be done by the looks of the Interbike coverage page. MTBR is a great site, I just cant figure out why they can never get on top of this event coverage! Why does it take a month to post these pics? Thanks to all who posted alternative event coverage...
I'm here, building VTSB's still...gregg
Oct 21, 2003 2:29 PM
...just finished the Turner booth. We actually have quite a few booths built already, but we're waiting for text copy from the manufacturers to put them live. We've got 9 more booths done, but just waiting. (If you are clever, I'm sure you could figure out the urls for the waiting booths.)

It takes time to build each booth, which sometimes involves mass amounts of typing, unfortunately. And I still have over 100 more daily coverage pics to upload.

And I've read all the comments here both positive and negative. I feel that I've already answered many concerns and criticisms in my post below:

http://forums13.consumerreview.com/crforum?viewall@@.efd218b

And I realize that part of the criticism stems from people's cravings and over-excitement to see all the new bikes and gear. I understand this, and we work hard to provide the coverage as quickly and completely as possible (and still answer emails about Classifieds, update the Photo Gallery, create and send out newsletters, delete flame wars involving that Pete guy, etc...)

But, in short, we are limited by our resources here.

That said, please keep checking back, and we're still updating photos from the show, every day.

C'mon, the "rent-a-tit" coverage was pretty comprehensive! nmBianchi4Me
