| 6" rotor on a '99 Boxxer? | Mike E. Oct 18, 2001 4:36 PM | | Just wondering if a 6" rotor would work on a Boxxer, or does it only use a 8" rotor? Thanks. |
| NO! | Jm Oct 18, 2001 5:03 PM | | heh, that came across kind of harsh.
anyhow, no, nope, not at all. The problem is the excessive offset caused by the 20mm leading axle. This and the mounting holes make it impossible to run smaller than 7-8" for rotor size, 6" will flat out not work. |
| NO! | Mike E. Oct 18, 2001 5:17 PM | | So does that mean I'll need a new adapter for my Hayes to fit on the disc mount?
Please not so harsh this time.hehe |
| I'm confused?!? | Mike E. Oct 18, 2001 6:36 PM | | This pic I just found looks like a '99 Boxxer with a '01 Avid disc brake with what appears to be a 6" rotor. Am I seeing things, or am I going to be able to mount my 6" Hayes?

| I'm confused?!? | Gutty Oct 18, 2001 8:47 PM | | Looks like it. can't be sure though.
Thats one messed up wheel though. |
| I am sure that is a custom-job | Jm Oct 18, 2001 8:52 PM | | and im not just refering to the true-ness of the wheel.
Besides being ultra-far out, the boxxer disc mount holes are DIFFERENT than any other, they are NOT international standard, and have been that way for many years. My boxxer is the same as the one in the picture. What has most likely happened is the owner has fasioned some sort of adaptor for the brake. This is fairly common when people have access to machine equipment. This is probably NOT something that avid makes. With the right machine equipment and know-how you could fit any brake to any frame, its just a matter of fashioning some sort of adaptor. Notice that the caliper is somewhat behind the leg, and close to the axle, the caliper would not be able to grip the full rotor if it was more inline with the leg, it would be too far out.
This is a one-off job.
You might be able to "make" a 6" rotor fit, but no one supports that, and it might be extremely difficult due to the problem of the leg being so far out. I fashioned a 8" rotor and mount for my rear brake on my DH bike, a 6" rotor simply would not have fit, even though I had it. |

| Looks like 51mm I.S.? What are you running CraigH? | Mike E. Oct 19, 2001 3:53 PM | | It sort of looks like the International Standard 51mm mount on the fork leg, doesn't it? Sorry for my ignorance, but I've never actually seen a Boxxer in person, so I'm only making assumptions.
What's your Boxxer like CraigH? Yours is a '99 6" travel right? |
| it is not IS | Jm Oct 19, 2001 5:18 PM | | it may look like it, but notice there is an adaptor in there. I assure you it is not IS, point in case, it takes a #6 Hope caliper, which is made SPECIFICALLY for the boxxer. All IS forks use a hope #3 caliper. You can look it up on the Hope site if you like. |
| It might be 51mm, but it's not I.S. | jw25 Oct 20, 2001 10:33 AM | | The mounts are placed farther upthe leg, presumable to allow use of an 8 inch rotor without adaptors. Usually, the lower mount is almost flush with the bottom of the fork slider. The Avid caliper comes with an I.S. adaptor standard, it's part of their "Caliper Positioning System" mount. The adaptor on the Boxxer looks a lot thinner, and was probably custom machined to place the caliper closer to the rotor. |
| Not my pic.... | CraigH Oct 20, 2001 11:51 PM | | I do have a 99 6" Boxxer with a 8" Hayes. |
| Not mine, just posting the pic... | CraigH Oct 20, 2001 11:50 PM | | as the original poster had a broken pic link. |
