fork dreams- '01 z1 mcr, '01 psylo xc, or '02 psylo sl (8 posts)
| fork dreams- '01 z1 mcr, '01 psylo xc, or '02 psylo sl | seb Oct 20, 2001 5:51 PM | | I've got a Hardrock FSR and have had a jones to replace the (manitou magnum) fork almost since the day I got it. I'm looking mostly at 5" single crown forks. I'm partly hoping a longer travle fork will lift the front end some- I know this will change my head angle, but my BB is just to damn low for how I ride.
Is that kind of fork a good option for some harsh trail rides, urban mahem, and general goofing off? I also commute on this bike- nothing like a stairide to wake you up in the morning- so a lockout or travle adjustment seems like a bonus.
I'm loking at the Marzocchi '01 z1 mcr, the Rock Shox '01 psylo xc, and the Rock Shox '01 psylo SL. Which fork offers the best combination of features and performance for me and my bike? I'm maybe 170 lbs with my camelback full and my helmet on. The xc is the cheapest, but the others are also affordable if they are signifigantly better. |
| Get the MCR | Doug in Japan Oct 20, 2001 8:39 PM | | Go with the MCR. The 01 Psylos had bushing problems. |
| Z1...its not really even close | Bullitman9 Oct 20, 2001 9:11 PM | | The Z1 is soooo much plusher, and overbuilt than all the others. Dont waste your time w/the psylos unless you are concerned with weight. The performance of the Z1's are so incredible, like a singlecrown fork with DH technology instead of a XC fork with longer travel. Trust me, you'll be much happier if you go Z1, unless weight is a big deal for you. |
| I've ridden both... | Sofa King Wee Todd Id Oct 21, 2001 1:59 PM | | My Z1 MCR is out of commission (yeah still!) the damper sheared off at the bottom, the replaced it fine, but I still am waiting for the footnut. (It's been roughly 2 months!) During that time, I've put my bud's 01 Psylo SL on, and didn't notice any difference at all. Maybe I'm not good enough to tell the difference, or maybe people only recommend what they own, but I'm sure you'll be happy enough with the Psylo. (I was able to get my MCR for $20 cheaper than the RS SL) |
| Z1...its not really even close | Dougal Oct 21, 2001 6:13 PM | | I haven't ridden the SL but the Psylo XC is just a hydracoil fork, I really don't like the feel of the damper.
On a fast hit you can feel the damping ramp up then drop off as the homer valve opens.
The SL and MCR have better dampers in them but I haven't ridden either.

| re: fork dreams- '01 z1 mcr, '01 psylo xc, or '02 psylo sl | CruzDemon Oct 21, 2001 4:11 PM | | Get the Z1 for big hits and years of fun, or get the Psylo SL for
big travel, a handy lockout, and the travel ajustment. I've tried
all the forks your looking at, and I own a '01 Psylo SL with the 2002
bushings. Still very nice compared to the Z1. |
| SL all the way | Lefty Oct 21, 2001 5:31 PM | | it destroys the mcr with the u turn system and is alot better this year then it was before. if you can get it in tullio and it will be amazing |
| avoid the '01 psylos | fonseca Oct 21, 2001 9:37 PM | | You should get a 2002 model, and I would recommend the sl over the xc because it has an aluminum steerer, and the u-turn feature, which works great. The lockout is nice but I don't use it too often. Mabye once I start doing some rides with long climbs. I do like how easy it is to adjust compression. Anyway I am very happy with it so far. |
