| Rockshock... | Adam Oct 20, 2001 6:36 PM | | I am thinking of buying a Bike that comes stock with a Judy SL
when i was test riding it, it was making a squeaky noise whenever it was being compressed, and I had tried another bike with the same fork, and it was making the same noise, are these forks crappy? or does the fork just need to be broken in?
also, which fork is better for XC riding
The Manitou Mars, or the Judy
there both 2001 models.
Thanks guys/girls |
| The squeaky noise that you are hearing from... | Squash Oct 21, 2001 8:07 AM | | the SL is most likely dry foam wipers. The Judy forks use what RS calls a XXX seal. It consists of the oil seal down in the fork, on top of that a foam wiper, and then the part you can see, the wiper. Under the wiper is the foam seal. The foam seal should be soaked with fork oil. This lubricates the stantion above the oil seal and keeps the wiper lubed as well. You see no oil gets above the oil seal. The squeak that you hear is the wiper moving on a dry stantion. This is not uncommon for a fork that has been stored for a long time or a brand new RS fork. Many times the foam wipers are dry from the factory. All you need to do is lift the wipers (not an easy job) and then oil the foam seal. Put the wiper back in place and compress the fork a few times. The squeak should be gone. This is part of the regular maintenance that is recommended for the fork in the owner's manual. As far as which fork is better for XC riding, either fork is a reasonable XC fork. The Manitou is stiffer structurally and is probably the better fork as far as maintenance goes, and is certainly much more adjustable. The Judy SL is a reasonable fork, but for 01 they did have some bushing problems, they wore out very quickly. If I had the choice between the two, I'd go with the MARS. But don't let it affect your bike choice. If you really like the bike with the Judy and it fits you, you can always buy the bike with the Judy and ride it until you can afford an upgrade later. The Judy SL is a reasonable performer when properly set up, and they are a fairly reliable fork.

| But you will have to do it too! | fonseca Oct 21, 2001 9:30 PM | | It's part of regular fork maintainance! And it really does not take long. You need to lubricate the foam ring every 25 hours of riding. Ask your bike shop to show you how, because it would be silly to pay them to do something so simple for you. |
