GDay

I'm wanting to build up a new bike, and seeing I've had heaps of luck with my 98 Z2 Atom Bomb, I want to use a marzocchi again. Anyway, has anyone had troubles with the 01 Z2 Xfly's? I kind of want a lighter fork this time around (but a marathon is out of the question) and the durability of SID's doesnt impress me. So what's the go with the X fly's? (I'm about 165-170lbs by the way, riding and racing XC)

Thanks

Mike

I've been riding an 01 X-Fly 100 all year and have had no reliability issues with it. My weight is 160 plus at least 5 lbs with camelback, tools, etc. I really like this fork, its very plush and I've never had a problem with it leaking air. The only feature I think it could use is the negative air spring of the Marathon to help tune the initial resistance. I dont know if the 2002 model has this. You can pick an 01 up at a great price now, you wont be sorry.

I used to run a '00 Z1 X-Fly 100mm on a Joker frame. I assume the Z2 uses the same air cartridge technolgy, but maybe I am wrong? Anyway, I'm not impressed with the fork. It looks great and the weight is nice, but it is not plush and not rigid. I think for lighter riders like yourself you won't even be able to tell you have a suspension fork on the small stutter bumps. I also have a SID XC that came standard on my Sugar 2. I filled the air chamber in March 2000, and have not touched it once ever since. And I ride at least twice a week, prefer technical trails, and weigh 240 lbs. I generally think Rock Shox the company is lame, and I run a heavy Z1 MCR on my Joker now, but heck, that SID has been a problem free performer from day 1. It is definitely plusher than the '01 X-Fly series, and it is also lighter.

Alot of people on this website say that Marzocchi adressed the problems with the x-Fly line in the 2001 models.

If you're getting the X-Fly, get the 2001 as it fixes a lot of the bushing and stiffness problems of the 2000. I think it's 279 at Supergo.com, store/online. It's really really plush, even for my light weight, 140lb. I've rode the SIDS, very light, looks cool, not as plush as the marzocchi's. I raced it xc, and it pretty much made the difference in the downhill portion of the race. At 3.5lbs, it feels unevenly light compared to the back, then again, I do have a rock shox deluxe on the rear. I've nailed some hard drops on the fork, and it looks to be holding up...
