Will Shock seals expand or contract in cold weather?schwinnson

I was just wondering if it would be alright to ride a rs pro deluxe (2001) in the cold or will the seals expand or contract in colder weather thus leaking oil or sumthing. A friend of mine stores his bike inside, took it outside rode it (same bike, same shock) and it started leaking oil evrywhere. was this just a bad timing rs breakdown or due to cold weather?

but that just may be for the Marzocchi rubber. It seems like if they expanded, they would tighten around the bore and shaft, while if they contracted it would be around the shaft. Ok this is all pretty irrelevant...

Also RS rear shocks leak spontaniously anyways, so it would probably leak while riding around your living room, who knows.
Yes rubber seals will contract when cold....Squash

and return to normal when warmed up, they'd have to get pretty hot to expand beyond they're designed size. How much they will contract depends on the material they're made of and the temperature. Most do not contract that much. They do however stiffen quite a bit because of the cold, again how much depends on temp. As Zedro stated, RS shocks are known for blowing seals and the like. It's highly unlikely that your friends problem was caused by indoor storage and cold weather riding. It may have aggravated the problem, but most likely is not the proximate cause.

mine loosen up in the cold. Installing the seals on my XC600 was easier when they were cold and supple; my z1s always felt smoother in the cold too. Maybe moisture plays a role too?
