How do you lift soft dust seals on Marzocchis?Painter

I've got a 2001 Marzocchi Z3 that's got super soft (think grip soft) dust seals that I'm having some serious trouble prying up.

They're so soft that I'm afraid of going through them with a screwdriver if I really work them, but my fork needs servicing.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to pry them up without damaging them or the stantions?

Thanks.

unless you want to replace them.

Proper servicing means taking the lowers of and wiping the seals down and replacing the oil. I'm not sure exactly what you had in mind.

Just follow the manuals instructions and stop at the part BEFORE they take the seals out. Dont be putting screwdrivers anywhere near your fork unless you want to replace the seals.

You probably need to do a oil change service and do as zeddy says.
If in the future you want to clean the seals only, on a Z-1 i flip it upside down, pump a bunch of times and let sit a few minutes upside down, the oil runs to top cap area of fork, then pull lowers off and immediately lay flat on table so any oil in lowers wont run out, the oil is all up inside the stancions, and none will leak if you get the lowers flat on a table quickly, since like 98% of it is in the stancions. Wipe the seals, AND....wipe the bottom of the stancions as the dirt will come off the seals and be right at stancion legs end. Then just put lowers back on and go. Again...this is if your oil is in good shape maybe 1 month old oil, only a quick seal service if you feel you need it.

This technique, I believe, was first introduced many years ago by none other than Brett from Kalo himself. Yep, he had a decent rep back then.
Anyways, this is the way to go so you can clean BOTH the dust seal and the oil seals on a regular basis. I swear by it.
Thanks. I'll try that. (nm)Painter
