Best COIL fork for X-C???Big-en

O.K., you well informed tell me my custom steel hardail under construction should be equiped with a coil type fork rather than an air/oil to carry my rather beefy 220lbs. OK which one??? I am using it for X-C only, no free ride or downhill, just singletack at moderate speeds. I need LIGHT WEIGHT and dependability (read BOMBPROOF) price not so much an issiue?

You want lightweight AND bombproof? That could be tricky. What's your definition of lightweight?

I love the wise words of Keith Bontrager, "Light. Strong. Cheap. Pick any two."

Just get a Marzocchi Z.1 Freeride. A lightweight fork will only be problematic for guys our size (I'm 225). The ECC will aid your climbing as well. You NEED stronger parts than the industry's "average" rider. Who cares if your bike weighs 28 pounds instead of 23 or 24, you weigh at least 50 pounds more than those riders. Light parts will be nothing but expensive problems.

With my distorted image of how stiff/strong an XC bike needs to be, I personally would only go with a 20mm through axle fork. Much much stiffer. But hey, like I said, I'm a sick individual. I ride XC on a 45 lb DH bike.

Best way to go is to eat a little weight....Squash

I'm 6'5" and 225 to 230, depending on the current holiday eats available :-) I ride a hard tail with a 01 Marzocchi Z3 stuffed on it. It's heavier than your "average" XC fork, pushes 4 lbs plus a shade real hard. But, after trying some of the lighter offerings from RS and Manitou, I haven't regreted the Zocch one bit. I guess I would recommend the Zocch MXR or MXC-ECC models for a new fork. Both are availalbe air or coil, both are available in 80 or 100mm of travel, and can be converted from 80mm to 100mm or vise-versa. And the MXR 100mm is available with an ECC option. The forks are stiff, reliable and will take a beating within reason. They ain't gonna be light, 3.8 to 4 lbs + most likely, but they are stiff, strong, as close to bombproof as your going to get in that weight range. Eat the weight in the fork department and save a little somewhere else. You won't be sorry.

Good Dirt
