| ECC and V brakes...Anyone have a solution for... | DR Dave Dec 18, 2001 3:47 PM | | the brake pad rub when the ECC is locked down? I tried a zip tie from the hole in my crown to the front brake cable to try and keep it from getting pushed over when compressed but it only helped a little.
Theres gotta be a simple fix. Anyone? ANyone? |
| Please clarify brake pad rub... | Matno Dec 18, 2001 4:22 PM | | I don't quite follow you. Do you mean that the cable somehow changes length when the shock compresses so that the brakes are squeezing together? Or do you mean that the brake pads are rubbing somewhere they shouldn't (like the tire)? Either way, something is wrong. I would say that you should check your housing and cables to make sure they are both long enough and that the housing fits tightly into both ends (brake noodle and lever). Also make sure that nothing is interfering with the housing when it bends to accomodate the fork compression. It should follow as smooth an arc as possible. That's as simple as I can come up with. Had a similar problem with the cable to my rear swingarm. |
| Brakes are probably rubbing all the time | Davide Dec 18, 2001 4:24 PM | | If the pads rub when ECC is activated they should also rub any time the fork conpresses (even if you might not notice it), which means that are probably adjusted wrong, either too close to the rim or maybe with too little housing |
| No. | DR Dave Dec 18, 2001 4:35 PM | | Everythings perfect. housing length, etc, etc. What happens is when the fork compresses when ECC is activated the housing in turn gets pushed to the right causing the left brake arm to be pulled into the rim. I could increase the spring tension to combat this but I hate heavy brake springs and I dont think this is necessary.
Yes, Im sure it does rub whenever it compresses more than 75mm but usually in that situation its only for a breif second and your not pedaling anyway. ECC is for climbs, thats why this concerns me.
Do you have ECC and if so, you havent noticed this? Or maybe you have discs up front? |
| I have ECC on my Z1 | Davide Dec 18, 2001 4:40 PM | | and I have not noticed any problem. Again the pads should not rub when the fork goes through its travel, if they do your brake set up is probably too tight ... increase the pad disance from the rim a bit, maybe? |
| I'm fiddling with housing length... | Shylock Dec 18, 2001 4:49 PM | | ...and noodle shape. I'll keep you posted. It's really a rather silly problem. Climbing is the last situation where you can tolerate drag. And the concept of the ECC is so much better than regular lock-out. Hope it can be made to work efficiently

| I think maybe the housing needs to be run a bit short. | DR Dave Dec 18, 2001 5:03 PM | | That way when it compresses it wont be so bad. Its definitely just a case of teh housing being too long when the fork is compressed. If you could just somehow just put some kind of limiter nub on the fork to keep the right arm from being pulled over by the housing.
Davide, are you using high spring tensions in your V brakes? Could you send a picture of your fork and brake extended and locked down? |
| Brian P, has tech support heard about this? Any ideas from them? | DR Dave Dec 19, 2001 11:59 AM | | I guess I could call them. |
| Guys, what are you doing wrong? | Davide Dec 19, 2001 6:56 PM | | There is no reason on earth for the brake to rub when ECC is activated, there must be a problem with the housing or the way the brake is set up . I have no problem at all on two forks with ECC ... |
| You do understand, Davide... | Shylock Dec 20, 2001 8:57 AM | | ...that most of us aren't nuts and actually have experience installing brakes? (I've got 10 years of doing this crap under my belt) You also realize this has been a complaint both here and in the major magazines? Just so we understand: this is a problem that should be easily rectified, but it's not due to our own ignorance regarding brake setup.
What brakes are you running?

| I am not sure, | Davide Dec 21, 2001 10:31 PM | | and what magazines are you talking about, I set up the marzocchi's with
Avid Arch Rival, Shimano XT and Avid SD, never had a problem ... |
| re: ECC and V brakes...Anyone have a solution for... | Yosuke Dec 20, 2001 12:02 AM | | I'm running my 2k2 Freeride with shorter housing length than usual and do not have problems...of course, I haven't tested the bike with longer housing. My current situation is a result of laziness from not wanting to replace them when I switched forks from 4" to 5". |
