99 Z2 BAM....(3 posts)

99 Z2 BAM....rbart4506

I just bought one new from a bike shop going out of business. I know it's an older model, but it has a bolt on crown and from what I've heard the pressed on ones are problematic. Also, I've got a 98 Atom Bomb and it still works flawlessly so buying something older doesn't bother me considering it's never been used. My question is should I get the seals and oil replaced right away considering the thing has been sitting for over a year at least. Or, should I just put it on ride it and then do a rebuild after a months use or so...

Thanks,
Rich

I would give it the standard 30 hours and then change the oil. I don't think it sitting around like that will do any damage to the seals. It will probably feel a little sticky at first, but it will break in after an hour or so.

As far as the crown goes, make sure that you check the bolts frequently. About a year ago, I was having problems with my stem sliding on the steerer tube. After a few rides, I was ready to get another stem--and then I figured out that the steerer wasn't moving in the stem; it was moving in the CROWN! I check it regularly now and haven't had a problem since.

Sitting around won't hurt anything at all. Put 3 98 Z2s on different bikes last year and never had a problem. The seals may be a little dry so you'll have some stiction at first, but it should go away after a few rides once things get lubed properly. You can help it feel smoother sooner with a little silicone spray on the stanchion tubes if you like.

You should probably change the oil every few months, but you won't have to replace the seals for a good, long time.
