| OK to spray graphite lube on stanctions | whiskeyjacks63 Dec 20, 2001 8:44 AM | | I was just wondering if it was ok to spray graphite lube underneath the boots on my 01 SXR. I remember hearing once that this lube is better than grease in this application. Is is safe on the seals?

| I wouldn't use graphite. | jw25 Dec 21, 2001 6:41 AM | | It'll probably be okay, but it's messier than plain oils, and won't be any "slicker". As was mentioned above, I'd stick to some silicone spray, which is dirt-cheap, and won't damage the seals. Watch the overspray, and wipe off any excess. On my Mars, I use a rag sprayed with silicone to wipe any dust off the seals and stanchions, then spritz a bit of silicone onto the seals, push the forks a few times, and wipe again. You don't want a lot of lube, which will just attract dust (yeah, even under boots. Junk still gets in, just nowhere near as much). In fact, with the microlube forks, there's much less need to lube the seals. I used to run a 98 SX-Ti, which needed the silicone treatment once a month or so, or else the dust wipers would squeak. With the newer forks, as you pump lube in, it seems to lube the seals, so you really only need to wipe dirt off. |

very sharp edged particles, not quite hard and sharp to do major damage, but a possibility. Just use the right lube, period! Manitou Prep M. |
| how bout teflon? | self-taught mechanic Dec 22, 2001 9:42 AM | | i just use the same finish line dry teflon stuff i put on my drivetrain on my mars elite. seems to work pretty well since the teflon is great about not picking up every dust particle that comes near. if this is a bad idea, somebody say so. |
