Z2 Bam vs. Atom Race(3 posts)

Z2 Bam vs. Atom RaceÐiamond Ðave

I've got a '98 Z2 Bam w/ Speedbomb/MountainSpring upgrade. I have a Z1Cr on my other bike and been spoiled by the travel, and easy tuneability. I have never gotten the Z2 dialed in so taht it's a smooth ride(relative to my Z1). My question is this...is there much difference between my '98 Z2 Bam, and the Atom Race 80mm from '00 & '01? I realize that my Z2 only had something like 73mm travel, and I upgraded it with the speedsprings, but how much difference might I see by changing to an atom race with a full 80mm?

Assuming you changed out the "stanchion sleeves" that seat the top out springs to the ones that came with the Speed Spring kit, then you'll get 75 mm of travel on the Z2. The Atom is also 75mm as Marz likes to count the 5 mm of negative travel when making travel claims on a fork.
The biggest difference you should notice, IMO, is the weight savings of the Atom.
Personally I think 75-80mm of travel for a hardtail is too little, and that 100mm+ is too much (for a hardtail). I wish they made some 90mm forks specifically for hardtails (or short travel dualies).
I notice a huge difference...Twiggy

Between my brother's 99 z2 Bam and my '00 Atom 80. Mine is WAY stiffer, way smoother, and the adjuster knobs work better!
