| 01 X-FLYset-up | joe blow Dec 21, 2001 10:10 AM | | Got a questions shock gurus,
I have an x-fly 80mm and i need find out about tuning for maxium travel?
I weigh 163lbs plus maybe 2+ with camel back and shoes. I followed the set-up from marz and put 29-30psi in the fork. I put a zip tie around the sanction and sga seems ok. Now here is the question is when i went riding I took a small jump and the zip tie obvisoulsy went up to point of travel. Now the question is what is the minimum height from the crown should this travel point be. I want to put as minimal pressure as possible for maximum travel. I really not goos when it comes to shock tunning. This is my first Air fork and have only been riding MTB fro 2 years now on a Manitou Syder(Sucks, I am a former road racer and time trial specialist/tri-racer , now hooked on MTB!!)
Any help would be great with this. |

Marzocchi forks allow you to change the oil height which also affects how quickly the spring rate "ramps up", especially at the end of the travel. You may want to take out some to "linearize" the spring rate. Air forks are not "linear" like your old coil fork which means that it gets stiffer faster, as it moves up in the travel when compared to your Spyder. One problem with air shocks is that the air pressure adjusts both the preload and the spring rate which can be independently adjusted on a coil sprung fork. Generally, first set the sag and then go ride it. If you feel like you want a softer, more compliant ride, especially at the beginning of the travel then set the pressure lower. If the fork moves excessively when you are cranking on the pedals, especially when standing up, then you need more air. I have Marzocchi's first effort at an air fork, the 99 Z2 Superfly. At the correct pressure, I get maybe 40mm of travel instead of the 65 its supposed to have. I don't know if Marzocchi fixed this problem in the later year forks so keep in mind that it might also be a design limitation of the fork itself. As far as the height from the crown, let all the air out of the fork and measure the distance when it is completely bottomed out. This will tell give the maximum travel. Good luck. |

Thanks for some suggestions! |
