SID100 snap ring panic!(4 posts)

SID100 snap ring panic!Shrumple

I've got a 2001 SID100 that I've killed.

Just wanted to change the oil and clean up the inside of the shock, but now I'm in snap ring hell. Seems that other snap rings I've seen have tiny holes in the ends that let snap ring pliers grab hold and squeeze... but these apparently don't – they're just smooth all the way around. How the @#^& can I get these seated back in the tubes (and please, please don't tell me I need a special, proprietary RockShox gizmo!!!).

ANY help appreciated...

I use a piece of 1/2" copper pipe, about six inches long, so that you can get your fist around it, to push the Homer valve down, ( the disk at the end of the stantion tube) and one end of the snap ring is relieved alittle bit, so that a small screwdriver can get under it. Pry the end of the ring in-and-up, and then just work it around and out.

Be very careful putting the airspring pistons back in though, lube 'em with slick honey, or M-prep, and work them in slowly, so that you won't damage the o-ring. Angry asian (angryasian.com) has instructions on his website.

Good luck, its pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Well, I've calmed down a little bit.

Thanks for info, but I've already gotten the snap rings out, cleaned and lubed everything, but my problem is getting them back IN. Without the little holes for snap ring pliers how do you grab hold of the rings and squeeze them back into the tubes? Any tricks?

Thanks again.

and push the Homer valve down, angle one side of the clip into the groove in the stantion tube and just work it around and down.
