| changing shock questions | cameron Feb 20, 2002 10:38 AM | | I've seen similar questions, but not exactly the same. What I want to do is change the fork on my bike...it it is currently threaded. I want (obviously) to get a threadless fork. Am I correct that all I need to buy are 1) fork 2) headset and 3) stem? What I have now is 1-1/8", so I just have to buy a 1-1/8" fork and headset, plus the stem that fits my style, correct? Are frames designed for threaded or threadless? Or does it not matter (frame-wise) what type of fork/headset combo I use? Can I simply (or my LBS) take the old stem, fork, and headset off, press on a new headset, and install a new fork and stem? Is there anything particularly tricky (that isn't covered on here somewhere, or in Zinn's book) that I might want to know? I have seen lots of people installing their own headsets, and I'd really like to save myself the $90 it costs at the LBS for this (it'd be cheaper to buy my own press, probably...and even cheaper to use one of the DIY presses I've seen on the Tool Time section). So...are these three the only parts I need? And will my frame accept a different type of headset? And is there anything tricky that I might not see coming?
TIA,

If you make the investment in a new threadless headset, fork and stem you might consider having the LBS install the headset cups into the frame and cut the steerer tube and the Star flange bolt in the fork steertube. Then, the rest you can do in about 15 minutes. its worth it to pay someone else with the tools and know how to do it right the first time without the risk of damaging something. |
