I was doing some maintenance on my 2000 Manitou Mars fork and I took off the outer leg/arch assembly. Putting it back together, I found that the "compression rod screw" on the bottom of the left leg wouldn't torque right. When I tried to torque it to 30 in.lbs., it would just spin and not tighten. I know that I didn't strip the screw because I can still untighten it and take it out. In the service manual, it says that you must fully compress the fork to tighten the screws on the bottom of the legs, but it didn't help. Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.

you're right about it having to be fully compressed. In my case that meant undoing the springsided topcap and compressing it enough to squish the bottomout bumpers so that the damper shaft is gripped enough to torque that dropout bolt. You'll get it soon enough. Be careful though, it needs very little torque, any more than that is enough to pull the threaded section of the damper rod right off, don't ask how I know.
