| Headshock conversion to 80mm Marzocchi - HELP | Spencer Feb 23, 2002 3:25 PM | | I have an older Cannondale and I need to remove the headshock, get an adapter and install the Marzocchi. My questions are 1)Can I do this? 2)Where can I get an adapter? 3)Any known problems?
I know I really should replace the bike but as a student I have no cash and I won't for several years. So, if I want to keep riding I have to change the forks. The fork was donated, so all I need (?) is hopefully an adapter and some instructions. Thanks! |
| you need to......... | heff® Feb 23, 2002 7:44 PM | | ......contact your local Cannondale dealer, and order part number A381/EBO. This is an adapter cup that fits into the Headshok headset, allowing the use of 1 1/8" forks. Unless they've changed them, you don't need any tools, other than the ones you normally remove a fork with......5mm hex wrench and a rubber mallet.
Don't forget to measure the steer tube on your new fork correctly, cut it right, and so forth.
Known problems? You've already said it.....depending on how old the C-Dale frame is, it might be reaching the end of its useful life, so you might want to cut your new steer tube a bit longer, to accomodate another frame in the near future. Framesets can be had for cheap, and decent ones, at that. I've heard great things about the Bump AP Blaster (whatever THAT means), and Jamis quite frequently blows out their hardtail frames for a more than reasonable sum. Get a new frame, and swap all your old parts over to it. Should only take you a day or so of tinkering......and you get an almost new bike for $250 or so.

| re: Headshock conversion to 80mm Marzocchi - HELP | litephil Feb 24, 2002 6:16 AM | | i wouldn't use the cannondale adapter.i used the clc adapter and its a lot nicer looking and you can use the old bearings.its also super easy to install.i can find their number if your interested.
why get a new frame if that one is working ok?i still have my 94 delta v that i gave to my kid and i works great.i still ride it as a back up.i think its bs that you need to replace a frame because its old.the majority of bikes aren't ridden that much or that hard.unless its totaly trashed i'd just ride it. |

| no offense intended. | heff® Feb 24, 2002 4:26 PM | | I knew I'd probably be sticking my foot in the C-Dale hole with that one.....oh well.
I agree with ya, to a point. If the bike's been gently ridden, no hardcore stuff, it's probably fine. But, aluminum DOES have a fatigue life, and depending on the year of the C-Dale frame.....well, they had a couple of years worth of bikes that broke pretty easily.
Just something to look for, before spending a ton of cash to upgrade.
BTW, I'd suggest the same for any make and model of frame.

| no offense intended. | litephil Feb 25, 2002 4:23 AM | | the head shock only came on the delta v or the super v back then and both of those bike were fairly strong imo.but they have a lifetime warr so if it does brake c dale will most likely warr it. |
