| Need Help With Front Suspension | Kutark Validus Apr 7, 2002 6:11 PM | | Ok, here is the deal, i bought a Haro Escape 8.1 Bike, i love it to death, have been riding like mad since i got it. Basically my problem is this, the front fork that came with it, to be nice about it, sucks my ass. The fork is a Rock Shox Jett, It will bottom out on even a 6 inch drop. I am personally 310 pounds (huge huh) but i had a 155lb friend ride it off a curb as a test and it still bottoms, bike shop tells me that it is set as stiff as possible. Whenever i go down technical parts of a trail it jars me around like hell. So i am shopping for a new fork.
There are 3 im lookin at right now, Jensonusa is selling them all, one is a 2001 rockshox judy c, the next is a manitou six deluxe 02, and the next is a rockshoc duke xc 02, i may be able to scrounge up the money for the duke but doubtful, ive been told manitou is a damn good fork company, and the judy c is cheap, very cheap.
My only problem is that my bike has disc up front, and i cannot find anywhere online that tells me if any of those forks have disc mounts, and the pictures of them are so damn small i cant look and see. If anyone owns one or knows any information about the forks i just listed please email me and i will be thoroughly grateful. Thanks again guys. email is kutarkvalidus@hotmail.com, also if you by chance know of somewhere that has good prices on other forks you think would be good for me, i can spend around 150 ish, preferably less. |
| re: Need Help With Front Suspension | Kutark Validus Apr 7, 2002 6:22 PM | | Ok, decided it might be useful information if i told you guys what kind of disc brake it is, it says Quad in large letters, and then under in small OMD-3, no idea what brand, nevertheless i figured it is helpful, also i am running continental vertical, 2.3 inch wide tires.
I also noticed the fork i have flexes like hell when i brake up front, which im sure is going to cause me to endo like hell one day, so if you guys know of those particular forks having any problem with stiffness please let me know. |

The Manitou however has a 74mm post mount type that will not work with your brake which is a 51mm IS mount. The Judy C is not much of an improvement so I'd skip it. I say spend the bit extra and get the Duke. It should be easily the stiffest out of the 3. Also, whichever fork you buy DEFINITELY order a harder spring set. All the manufacturers have these available so try to get to an LBS and order some, you're probably gonna want the hardest one they make. Also have the LBS fit them if you're not comfortable opening up a brand new fork and tinkering with it.

| Agree... | PBK Apr 8, 2002 3:42 AM | | He's right. Get a solid fork with heavy springs or air springs. RS Duke/Psylo or Marzocchi forks for you. It will be expensive compared to your bike, but paying $100 for a fork that's only slightly better than your current Jett isn't worth the money. There are such a thing as a used fork off ebay, but you should ow a thing or two before doing that. Maybe someone can help you? |
| Agree... | Kutark Valdidus Apr 8, 2002 6:37 PM | | Thanks for all the info, one reason i wasnt seriously lookin at the duke was the fact that i thought it was air only, i figured being as big as i am would be really bad for an air shock, ill definitely look into it, hopefully i can scrounge the rest of the money i need for the duke. thanks again guys. |
