Do I need to lube the steertube when installing shocks?(2 posts)

Do I need to lube the steertube when installing shocks?Philip

I know, dont make fun, but Im serious. I am about to build my first bike and I dont know where and where not to lube up. Do I grease the steerer tube before sliding in the new shock? While you are at it, I plan on using grease on all screws before sticking them in, and on the bottom bracket. Is there any other important grease point>>>???

The only place on the steerer you should grease is at the steerer/crown junction to slide (rather pound) the headset bearing race. Other than that, try to keep the steerer free of grease. Especially when it comes time to clamp the stem.

Greasing bolts is a good idea. BB threads, bolt threads, pedal threads, crankarms, BB axle, seatpost, etc. I lube just about every forced contact point (except the stem/steerer contact area!).

From my experience, bolts and such thread in easier and further in when a little lubricant is applied. In fact, back when I got my first bike the drive side crankarm kept coming undone. I asked my LBS what I should do and they recommended glue! Ugh, someone then suggested grease and it never came loose again.

Anyhow, good luck.
