| Vanilla Forx spring side click.... | Dirt Pilot Jun 4, 2002 4:45 PM | | ...I determined that the clicking on small stutter bumps was definitly coming from the (left) spring side. I tried a 1/16" spacer and then a 1/8" spacer under the preload top cap and it did'nt make a differance...still clicking.
I next tried DGCs idea of 60cc of oil in the left leg rather then the specified 30cc and I believe the irritating clicking is gone! I did'nt have time for a really long ride to give it a good test but it looks promising.
Thanks SS and DGC for all of your ideas.
I'l keep y'all posted. |
| Glad you found a fix... | El Jester Jun 5, 2002 3:59 AM | | I hate noises from the bike when I ride. If either of mine start making the clicking I guess I'll add more oil. |
| ...I should be able to get a good long ride in today and I'l know for sure. Nice DS rig. Here's a link to my one and only...Dirt Pilot "Let me see your Ellsworth" 5/31/02 7:08pm | Dirt Pilot Jun 5, 2002 4:43 AM | | approved |

| DS rig?! That's my XC bike.... | El Jester Jun 5, 2002 6:40 AM | | Original plan was to race some DS (with a small shop sponsership - mostly just parts at cost) this year but 2nd child was born in march and has put a damper on the racing scene. It sees a lot of action on the trails now.
Nice bike! I wanted an Ellsworth but a friend at the LBS got me a deal I couldn't refuse on a SC Bullit (2001 I need to get some pics of it). |
| 2nd child put a ....damper on your racing?... | Dirt Pilot Jun 5, 2002 7:00 AM | | ...A little unintended suspension pun I suppose :) |
| Yep... | Roy Jun 5, 2002 6:42 AM | | I believe the rattle people are getting is due to the bushing play. Not everyone gets it because of tolerances, not enough wear (yet), or the leg may come with more oil in it (QC problems at the factory). |
| My theory 'bout the click is... | Dirt Pilot Jun 5, 2002 6:56 AM | | ...That it's due to the compression rod bouncing around in there and the extra oil helps dampen the noise...so now i gotta take it apart again and measure bushing ID vs stanchion OD.
The fun never ends! |
| A question... | Roy Jun 5, 2002 7:17 AM | | If the rattle is in the spring side, than isn't the compression rod in the other leg? I only have an R, not an RLC, so I'm not sure which leg the compression hardware is in (I'd have guessed the rebound leg, though).
One other thought, if it were the compression rod, than those with R's or RL's would not experience this rattle. I have an R and it doesn't rattle (yet) but I don't know about the rest of the riders. |
| An answer... | Dirt Pilot Jun 5, 2002 7:42 AM | | ...I have an R. The compression rod (I think thats what it's called)
is in the left leg under the main spring. It is my understanding that the left leg are identical (sombody correct me if I'm wrong) in all three models. Rebound damping, lockout and compression damping duties are all done in the right leg. |
| re: Vanilla Forx spring side click.... | Jrm Jun 5, 2002 6:44 AM | | i was thinking a single garden hose washer in between the spacers (125mm travel setting) would work |
| This sounds very promising.... | Roy Jun 5, 2002 7:20 AM | | if it is the spacers and if the garden hose washer is the right diameter. Since it's rubber, it would be ideal (not to mention cheap). If someone tries this and it still rattles, I'd guess it's not the spacers.
Excellent suggestion Jrm. |
| But rubber might not be the best thing because.... | Dirt Pilot Jun 5, 2002 7:55 AM | | ...Oil can deteriorate some rubber compounds over time. It might be best to submerge the hose washer in some fork oil for a coupla' days (weeks?) to test first.
I have some plastic hose washers that I got at the local hdwr store, that might be an alternative if the oil eats the rubber ones. |
| use solid spacers, or PVC, rubber sqirms and folds up inside. nm | derby Jun 5, 2002 12:28 PM | | |
