How to Remove Bearing Race on Fork(5 posts)

How to Remove Bearing Race on Forks4b
Jun 4, 2002 11:55 PM
Sorry, I'm not even sure it's called the bearing race. It's the piece that's stuck on the fork when you remove it from the bike. I'm going to be changing out the fork with a new one. So I'm guessing I'll need to remove that piece to put on the new fork. So is there a tool used to remove it, or can I somehow jiggle it off without buying a tool. I haven't tried anything yet because the fork's not here yet. But I want to be ready when it gets here. Thanks!!!

VAR make a great tool for removing the crown race... problem is it costs £165! Or you could use the time honoured method of the 'hammer and screwdriver'. Turn the forks upside down and make sure the steerer is resting against something soft so it won't get damaged. Then gently tap around the race from all sides with the screwdriver until it works itself off. But be careful, they get damaged easily.
If you get a new headset get one with a split crown race (FSA), as these are simple to remove/install.
Good luck.

Depends on the headset, but you can probably just pick up another crown race at your LBS. When I switched from a Marzocchi to a Fox Forx, I bought another Chris King crown race from my LBS for 5$.

Use an old dull chisel because it very well could chip the edge when set agains metal. Just don't scare the bearing surface and outer edge.

Or take it to a shop and they can remove it with the right tool for a couple bucks.

I'll try it myself. If I can't and it's not damaged, I'll take it to my LBS. If damaged, then no problem buying a new race. Thanks again.
