| Cannondale Shock Upgrade Challenge | Chris Volk Jun 5, 2002 7:27 AM | | Anybody got an idea of how I can upgrade my F-700 with a decent front shock. Cannondale wants a bundle for a Hedshock upgrade. I'm wondering about other brands to replace the Hedschock alltogether. |
| Buy the reducer cups from Cannondale, | Twilight Error® Jun 5, 2002 9:28 AM | | A King headset and a Marz Z1, you'll never worry about the front end again. It'll cost a little more than the Headshock upgrade, but you'll have a FAR more reliable setup. |
| Careful downgrading | dirtdad Jun 5, 2002 9:35 AM | | Be careful when you downgrade from a Headshok. You will have to get used to regular fork flex. Plus, don't screw up your geometry. You will probably have to go to a much longer travel fork to keep from dropping the front of your bike. Headshoks are pretty tall. I suggest getting an upgraded HeadShok or Lefty from mtbr market or Ebay. That is what I do. They sell for much less used. |
| doing the same thing | Dler][der Jun 5, 2002 2:36 PM | | I'm in the process of doing the same thing.
But I got my lbs to machine an adapter that sits flush with the top and bottom of the head tube so as to minimise the stack height.
I plan on installing a CK headset and a Z1 MCR on the beast. The chap above is right when he says you have to go to a longer travel fork. I currently have the Fatty Ultra and the axle to crown ( head tube )is almost the same as my Z1 in the 5" setting. But I figure it should work OK as the rear has 4.5" of travel. If it turns out to be too slack then I'll reduce the travel to 4" at the front.
I'd definitely say go with the "Upgrade" as after numerous experiments the Headshock feels fairly unexciting compared to my other forks ( Psylo SL, Z1 MCR, Fox Forx Vanilla ) I guess it's OK for pure XC racing where you only want minimal response from your fork.

| The Cannondale-made adapters correct for the stack height. (nm) | Twilight Error® Jun 5, 2002 2:55 PM | | |
| Here's your answer...... | Razor Jun 6, 2002 6:58 AM | | Go to www.clcconcepts.com and buy the C'dale Adapter. It costs about $60 and it allows you to mount a traditional shock (Marz, Manitou etc.) using the original Headshok bearings so you don't have to buy a new headset. I just upgraded my F500 to a Manitou Mars last week and I couldn't be happier. I did the conversion myself and it was very simple. Good luck. |
