| Headset Question... | Big Bird Jun 5, 2002 6:08 PM | | My headset continually feels loose (knocks on bumpy terrain, or going over a curb), but I have set the bearing preload pretty high, high enough that I have already pulled a star nut from the steerer (freak occurance?). Are the bearings in the headset (an older cartridge bearing Aheadset that I've rebuilt a couple of times) causing this play?
Note: The fork is a newer Marzocchi and there is the proper distance between the top of the steerer and the top of the stem, so that's not the problem.
THANKS.

| re: Headset Question... | Bob Powell Jr. Jun 5, 2002 7:04 PM | | Well if you are tightening your headset down that much and it was still lose, I would definitely start over with a new headset! All you have to do is crush a bearing slightly and it will be defective! You also must always make sure it is not play coming from your fork bushings also!! I've seen this mistake made many times. The way you can check this is placing your hand around the headset while rocking the bike back and forth, then around the seal area of your fork while rocking the bike back and forth. You should distinctivly be able to feel where the looseness is coming from!! Good luck, Bob. |
| Make sure that the base plate... | Quattro Jun 5, 2002 7:35 PM | | is flush with the top of the fork crown.Usually there is a base
plate which fits on the fork steer tube. It needs to be pushed
down flush with the top of the crown or it will be loose every
time you ride as the base plate will slowly be pushed down every
time you hit a large bump.Get it down flush and then tighten
up the stem.I used a piece of plastic pvc pipe to push it
down flush. |
| check spacers.. | Kham Jun 6, 2002 2:53 PM | | make sure you have enough spacers..try adding one to see if it tightens it. |
