| Z2 Atom Race 100 vs. Fox Vanilla 125 RLC? | kokothemonkey Jun 6, 2002 8:53 AM | | O.k. here's the deal, I can get a great deal on the Z2 Atom Race 100 (probably about half price) on a new one. The Fox I would have to buy from the classifieds or ebay probably used. This fork will go on a Yeti AS-R and I will not be doing any freeriding specifically so I doubt I would ever use the 125 option on the Fox so I think 100mm is about perfect. I will be doing aggressive/long trail riding and reliability and low maintenance are probably at the top of my priority list. If I could get the same deal on both forks I would probably get the Fox just because it sounds like it is more plush than the Zoch and I have tested one briefly and it feels great. Probably after reliability and low maintenance I would like the best stiffness and steering precision which I know is great on the Fox. I am also a little concerned over how many people seem to have the bushing problem with the Fox, it doesn't seem like the Zoch gives any problems at all. All opinions welcome!
Thanks. |

If there's a big gap in price, the Marz. I think the Fox is the better fork but not leaps and bounds so a big gap in price is worth the small gap in performance. |
| A good choice for reliability & low Maintenance... | El Jester Jun 6, 2002 10:53 AM | | is the 2000-2001 Manitou Xvert. You can get it at great prices right now, usually between $100-$150 (original retail was $300+). It is a very good handling 105mm fork that has great dampning controls via the TPC+ system. It is very easy to service and tune and has a grease ingection port to help keep it smooth between services. Check out my post from a discussion yesterday.

| A good choice for reliability & low Maintenance... | MIGHTYCAKEMAN Jun 6, 2002 11:30 AM | | SS, I'm thinking about one of these Xverts to replace the Headshok on my backup Cannondale. I figure it'll raise the front end a little; that'd be a good thing. Can't beat the price. As I'm 220# would I need different springs?
Thx. |
| I rode mine... | El Jester Jun 7, 2002 5:00 AM | | with the stock elastomers and spring at the same weight (215-220) and found it to be good for my riding style and terrain (agressive XC, slow climbing, fast downhill, lots of air on rough, rocky, root filled trails). If you were going to use it for serious XC riding were climbing and sprinting on the flats was important you will want to stiffen it up.
It was an awesome 4" travel fork. I got mine from universal and the discription said it had a steel steertube and when it arrived it was aluminum!! |
| I've had both and I chose................ | Yeti Rider Jun 6, 2002 9:09 PM | | The 02 Atom Race 100. I owned and rode the Vanilla RLC for 3 months. Took it off for some maintanence, borrowed a buddies Z2 Atom Race 100. I liked it alot better. The small, stutter type, bump performance was superior to the Forx. I could tell no appreciable difference in stiffness/steering precision. I think the marz. damping system is superior too. I think the ECC is a better system than the full lockout on th forx. I only use it for short steep climbs, and it really helps with the front lowered with ECC.
So I sold my Forx Vanilla 100 RLC and bought an 02 Atom Race 100, and I am very happy with it.
Hope this helps.
PS. I also ride an AS-R.
Good Luck. |
| Thanks! | kokothemonkey Jun 7, 2002 5:39 AM | | That's exactly the comparison I'm looking for, I just have another question, is the handling ok on the ASR with 100mm? I looked and all of their bikes come spec'd with 80mm forks but I would like to run 100mm if the handling isn't too wild.
Thanks again! |
| No problems... | Yeti Rider Jun 7, 2002 3:52 PM | | I find the bike is still fairly quick in tight singletrack, I just feel like I have so much more control with 100mm. I actually am getting a 90mm travel max, compared to 72mm or so with my Z3.
I bought he Fox because of all the hype, and it is a good fork. I just prefer the marzocchi to Forx. Like I said, noticeably difference in small bump performance, and it was not a in the parking lot comparison, I rode the Vanilla RLC for 3 months, went back to a 01 Z3 100mm coil fork while the Forx was getting serviced. The Z3 outperformed the Fox. But the Z2 Atom Race 100 has a much better damper and ECC.
Don'd worry about the handling, it get's blown out of proportion on this BB sometimes.
Good Luck! Enjoy the Ride. |
| Go Marzocchi!!!!!!!!!!!! | Jaybo Jun 7, 2002 12:25 PM | | I own a Fox Vanilla R and spent many years on Marz. 22 and Z1 forks! It is a nice working fork; however, the play in the bushings is unbelievably annoying. I have called Fox a couple times; they tell me it will work itself out when the fork breaks in. Yaw, right! It helps to put 10cc more oil in it, but it is still noticable. It feels like the headset is loose. The stiffness issue is one of the most overstated things in MTBing. Believe me! You will not feel a stiffness diference between the Marz. and the Fox. You may feel your wheel or tire flexing, but not the difference in these forks. Fox shocks are nice, but they need a year to work the bugs out of them. I wish I would have went Atom 100. |
