| Z1 MCR springs to light for me? | Seb Jun 6, 2002 2:52 PM | | I've got a '01 Z1 MCR fork and it seems to bottom out a lot. I put it on during the winter and rode it some, enough to realise I had to crank the preload up almost all the way. Then I put the bike away until about a week ago and rode my other steeds while I got it upgraded / fixed with new brakes, wheels, and drivetrain bits.
Anyhow, I now seem to be using up all the forks travel quite often. I have a zip strip on the stanchion, and it always ends up sitting up against the crown. I do a fair number of 2-3 foot drops, log crossings, and steep descents on every ride. Even without those things, I seem to use up 3/4 of the 130mm travel pretty easily, just crossing rough ground at a good speed.
Do I need heavier springs? I weigh 175 lbs, and my bike is 35 lbs. I'm under the impression that occsionally bottoming the fork is good, because it means you are getting ideal performance the rest of the time. On the other hand, I want the benefit of some suspension when / if I "go big"- right now I'm not sure I have "room to grow".
If I get heavier springs, is there anything else I need to do besides just swapping the springs? Would progressive wound springs be the answer? Anybody have expreince with the reults of putting heftier springs in this fork? |
| re: Z1 MCR springs to light for me? | Jrm Jun 6, 2002 3:13 PM | | The 01' MCR came with heavy springs rated for riders up to 210lbs. To be able to get the responsivness you have now you can go to a extra heavy compression spring set from marzoochi for $50. With the side effect of slowing your rebound and compression you can also try a heavier weight oil in the shock. |
| try higher oil height if bottoming metal to metal | derby Jun 6, 2002 3:57 PM | | Add about 6 - 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) in oil height to each leg to reduce the air volume (which tunes bottom out spring ramp up rate). Add that much again until no metal to metal bottom out, and then maybe back out a little oil so you do still get occational metal bottom.
But if still too harsh even without bottoming to metal, then try what Jrm susggests, heavier weight oil (stock is 7.5 wt) for slower compression, or firmer springs. Maybe try 10 weight. With hevier weight oil, you'll likely need to speed up rebound adjustment to avoid packing up the travel at speed.

| Oil level | mountainbiker2 Jun 6, 2002 3:48 PM | | You have to raise the oil level. |
