| airshock upgrade with lockout? | Marc Webster Aug 8, 2002 7:41 AM | | Hello All,
I have been thinking of upgrading my 2001 Kona Manomano from the Fox Vanilla R to an airshock with lockout. I actually bought a second hand Stratos xc4 and checked with stratos to make sure it would fit my bike before purchasing and unfortuantely they were mistaken. So now I need to try something else. The stratos design had a problem with the distance from the main shock body (on both ends) to the mounting eylet. The body of the shock would interfere with the mount before the eyelet could be mounted to the frame. Anyway, this leads me back to Fox or cane creek.
How do the Cane creek shocks compare to the Fox Floats? Does the Compression button on the cloud nine stiffen the shock up as well as the Float RL? I like the DT swiss shock, but unfortunately its not available in the USA yet. Actually, I really like the feel of my Vanilla R except for the bob when climbing. Anyone using the Vanilla with the lockout feature? Are there any other companies I should look at?
Best regards,
Marc Webster |
| can't someone help me out! | Marc Webster Aug 9, 2002 7:10 AM | | I am responding to my own message to bump it back up in the list. If you have any advice please let me know,

| Try the Fox Vanilla RL | frank Aug 9, 2002 8:40 AM | | If you like the feel of a coil shock then try the Vanilla RL, all the good things of a coil shock and lockout to boot! I ran one on my bike for a while and really liked it. If you want lighter weight and lockout then the Fox Float RC is the way to go. You can also get the new remote lockout kit for it. |
| Cane Creek..... | TC Aug 9, 2002 9:04 AM | | I recently received my cane creek cloud nine from their upgrade offer(I also own a 1.5 year old AD12 which i'm keeping on my other bike) and it works great. The cloud nine has longer eyelets than the AD12 did and will fit a mount that fits further into the frame. the lockout isn't a solid lock that creates a hardtail but minimizes the travel of the shock. you still get a few mm of very damped movement but it actually seems to help when climbing locked out and rolling over a few rocks or roots or whatever. The total cost was $175 and cane creek can make the shock to fit your bike. Call them and ask for Doug Beeler in the technical dept. They are a very good company in my opinion. |
| Cane Creek..... | Marc Webster Aug 9, 2002 12:41 PM | | Hey TC,
I just called Cane Creek and they verified that the cloud 9 would fit my bike. The only problem is that they said that the upgrade was 225.00 and you mentioned 175.00. Did you get the AD10 or some sort of special deal. Also, how well does the compression button work? It says that it does not lock it out ALL the way which allows it to absorb a hit while climbing or if you forget. All I am trying to do is reduce or eliminate the bobbing while I climb. My friend forgot to turn off his lockout on his fox rl and damaged it on a HARD hit so I like the feature on the cane creek but I am unsure how firm the ride is while climbing.
Thanks for your reply,

| hmmmm..... | TC Aug 9, 2002 1:46 PM | | Well,
I don't know exactly what happened. I actually asked for an AD12 upgrade for an NRS frame because it has no use for a lockout but a cloud nine came in the mail. it fit the nrs perfectly. i feel special now. Sorry to give you the wrong amount, i can only tell you what happened to me. $225 is still a great price for the cloud 9. i payed more than that for my AD12 when i bought it.
The only way i can describe the "lockout" is that it feels like you've added a lot more air pressure and the shock just ramps up very quickly. it still moves a few mm and it feels like it has a very small, high pressure air chamber. it doesn't bob anymore at that point but still moves a bit on a fast or larger hit. Even at $225 i still think it's a bargain and from my experiences with cane creek (ordered a seal kit for the AD12 to have on hand but haven't needed it and actually got 2 from cane creek) their customer service is very good. |
