| marzocchi z.3, z.2 atom race, EXR, or MXC | mtngirlie Aug 8, 2002 6:34 PM | | help! i can't decide, i want an 80ish mm travel fork, and i don't want to break the bank...which of these forks is the best for a 140 lb. cc biker who doesn't want to worry about too much maintenance? i ride an fsr xc...what do yall think?
thanks,

| Fox | Fox Aug 8, 2002 9:24 PM | | because its less maintenance and lighter, and plusher. The Atom Race is plusher than the other Marzocchi you mentioned, at your weight this is important to consider. The fox can be set at 90mm travel too!
Atom Race would be decent but you will need to give it a 2-4 oil changes a year. |
| Look at the 2001 Atom Race..... | Markv Aug 9, 2002 6:37 AM | | You can still find the 2001 Atom Race mailorder for around $270. I've been riding a 2000 Atom 80 for two years now and it's a great fork. Change the oil once or twice a year and forget about it......... |
| Agree | DCS Aug 9, 2002 6:55 AM | | The 2001 Atom Race kicks ass. Plush and durable, very low maintenance. Probably just about the best performing 80mm fork out there. If you are 140 lbs though, I would recommend using 5wt oil. |
| MXC with 80mm spring kit | gonzostrike Aug 9, 2002 7:49 AM | | I've used the following forks in my MTB history:
1995 Rock Shox Quadra 21 (63mm)
1997 Rock Shox Judy SL w/ Englund Air innards (70mm)
1999 Marzocchi Z2 BAM (80mm)
1999 Marzocchi Z3 QR20 (100mm)
2000 Manitou SX-R (80mm)
2001 Marzocchi Z3 80 (80mm)
2002 Marzocchi MXC 100 coil (100mm)
2002 Marzocchi Super T Pro (180mm)
For most conditions experienced in XC racing and longer XC epic rides, I have found that the 2002 Marzocchi MXC 100 coil is an excellent fork. I run one on the front of my singlespeed. I weigh 165 lbs and am running the factory medium springs and factory default oil weight and oil level.
I don't notice much of a difference between the Z3 and the MXC. The Z2 series have slightly better damping, but that improved damping isn't an issue unless you ride VERY aggressively and VERY fast through VERY rough, rocky/droppy trails.
I think the MXC is the best fork bargain around.
The Manitou SX-R (now called "Six Deluxe") also is a good fork for the money at your 140 lbs weight. For folks at my weight or heavier, it's too flexy for anything but milder or slower rides.
Fox still are working out their initial bugs. I wouldn't get one unless you do so through a shop that is a Fox Forx dealer. |
