Duke Race damping problems......(1 post)

Duke Race damping problems......TWD
Aug 9, 2002 9:51 AM
I need some expert advice on some problems I'm having with my Duke race. About a month ago, I went to adjust the damping, and ended up stripping the adjuster out (yeah I know it only is supposed to turn a little bit, it was frozen up after a really wet winter of riding without ever being adjusted).

At any rate, the head of the adjsting screw is stripped (I don't think the adjuster itself is stripped). I figured it was no big deal, it was stuck at a reasonable setting. So I've been riding it that way for a month or so, without problems. Then, on the last ride, all of a sudden the fork starts acting totally crazy on me. Feels like it doesn't have any damping at all, and it pogoes and tops out really hard. It was so bad that I was having a hard time keeping the bike on the trail.

The positive and negative air chambers are holding air just fine, so I figure the problem is isolated to the damping assembly only.

After that lengthy intro, my questions is if I tear the fork apart, will I really be able to tell what is wrong from looking at the innards? I downloaded the service guide from Rockshox. There doesn't seem to be too much to the damping assembly. If one of the O-rings is blown, I can probably see that, but are there other things that could be wrong that won't be visible?

The fork is still under warranty, should I just send it in to Rockshox, or deal with it myself?

Thanks in advance.
