| Manitou Six super vs. Six deluxe | Dr_Znaharov Aug 10, 2002 11:33 AM | | I got tech data, prices and other stuff about them but still can't understand for what type of riding are they created. They are both cheaper substitutes of the other Manitou forks, The Deluxe is probably made for XC, The Super is than... a bump eater like the Black, isn't it? Tell me if I am wrong |
| Only mildly wrong. | heff® Aug 10, 2002 9:25 PM | | The Deluxe has no compression adjustment, it relies on oil weight. The Super has full TPC, with compression AND rebound adjustments.
Travel is the same, as are spring rates and construction. It's only a matter of an added tuning feature.
For the extra bucks, go with the Super. If you're strapped for cash now, get the Deluxe, and later on order the compression assembly from the Super, it's a 5 minute retrofit.

| are you sure, Heff? | pedalinbob Aug 11, 2002 5:23 AM | | i'm not trying to be a smarta$$, but i am holding a 2002 manitou six deluxe right now.
it has full tpc, as well as external compression, rebound, and preload adjustment.
i had called Manitou before purchasing the six deluxe, just to be sure that it had tpc (there was some conflicting info here on mtbr at the time)...and they stated it does have tpc.
unless my fork is mislabeled, and has some dummy knobs...and the folks at manitou are incorrect....the six deluxe is tpc equipped.
and a heckuva deal it is!!!!

| yeah yeah, I got it backwards. | heff® Aug 11, 2002 1:22 PM | | .taht od i semitemoS

| Hey Heff, you got that backwards.... | Squash Aug 11, 2002 8:04 AM | | The Super is the one with the fluid flow damping and the Deluxe it the fork with the TPC. Hey I have a hard time keeping straight anymore myself. To many models with to many different configurations to remember.

SIX deluxe 120$
Description
Everything an XC suspension fork should be - but without the high-end price tag! Adjustable for nearly any rider or terrain, the Six Deluxe is the ultimate incarnation of affordable yet truly high performance suspension technology. Manitou's latest & stiffest 1-piece magnesium XC lower casting design and stiff forged crown offer pinpoint steering precision, while the combo Coil/MCU spring and TPC oil damping system provide 80mm of XC-friendly travel. Not long ago, this level of performance cost hundreds more - now it's yours for, coincidently, about the price of a speeding ticket.
Twin Piston Chamber Damping
After years of proven performance on trails and race courses around the world, Manitou's ultra-reliable Twin Piston Chamber (TPC) oil damping system has remained a clear leader in the suspension fork technology race, for it's lightweight, reliability, and wide range of easy adjustment. Guaranteed leak-proof for 2 years, the system uses a low-volume sealed oil chamber and independently adjustable rebound and compression pistons for maximum tunability with a minimum of maintenance.
Combination Coil/MCU Spring System
By using a combination of Micro Cellular Urethane (MCU) and a short coil spring, the Six Deluxe allows ultra-plush performance on small bumps and trail ripples, but also provides well-managed control on larger hits. |
| They are great forks... | pedalinbob Aug 11, 2002 9:42 AM | | well, im not sure about the super, but i have a 2001 SXR (same as six deluxe)on my fiance's bike, and a six deluxe which will be going on a new frame in 2 weeks...and i am about to order another six deluxe to keep as a spare.
these are excellent all-around forks.
they are not the lightest or stiffest, but they are easily tuneable, reasonably light, inexpensive, stiff enough for my 145lbs, very reliable, and simple! set it up and forget it for a while.
(i must admit that although i like the duke race on my nrs, i hate the fact that it is so labor intensive: before every ride i have to lube the upper seals and check the +/- pressure. with the six you just get on and ride.)
all you need to do is about once a week (or after each ride), clean under the boots, and once a month or so, inject some lube. you can change the oil/clean it once or twice a season.
also, you can go onto the manitou website and download the manuals. there is also a very nice mrd tuning manual, which i downloaded and printed.
just remember, these are manitou's cross country forks. they are not meant for hucking/jumping/freeride or heavyweights.
good luck,

| 10nx a lot Bob | Dr_Znaharov Aug 11, 2002 2:14 PM | | I'll go for the Deluxe!!! |
| more info for you... | pedalinbob Aug 11, 2002 5:49 PM | | if the stock medium spring is not good for you, call speedgoat and get the right one. it costs ~$20 shipped, and is very simple to install.
you can also mix the spring/elastomer to tune it: you just have to make sure that the elastomer is equal to or greater than the coil rating.
example: you can use a med spring with a heavy elastomer to prevent bottoming. but, you could not use a medium spring with a light elastomer.
i weigh 145, and either use the soft spring/elastomer or soft spring/ medium elastomer.
i will be trying the stock setup soon on my new frame.
also, realize that the elastomer is sensitive to cold: it will firm up.
good luck,
Bob |
| ok just 1 more question | Dr_Znaharov Aug 13, 2002 7:03 AM | | Do you perform the service of your Deluxe(s)by yourself? Is it safe for an average tech lamer like me (well not a complete idiot ;)) to mount it by myself and than make the periodic checks of oil without great danger for my life? Because it's a good idea for me to omit the help of my local retailer (that's another story). |
