| should i remove boots from my 98 SID? | indicaM3 Aug 11, 2002 2:08 PM | | most of these old SIDs i see have no boots, and i'd really rather not have them, as long as there is still protection there...mine has wipers still even without the boots right? like, im not missing out on some special seal kit im supposed to have for running no boots am i? |
| re: should i remove boots from my 98 SID?no | Gratefulrider Aug 11, 2002 5:11 PM | | It is my general understanding that the XXX seals on newer rock shox means there is no longer a need for the boots..in fact the boots can hold in moisture and particles... while the older models (such as 98)that have the older style seals need boots to keep stuff out.. if you don't like the look you could cut them off and buy lizard skin shock boots (better looking). but in any case function before form- leave em on...also reccomend remebering to keep your seals lubed.. |
| woops. oh well | indicaM3 Aug 11, 2002 9:25 PM | | i got tired of waiting and cut em off with scissors! haha. i think ill be alright. all the racers i used to see with these first SIDs never had boots, as well as all the bikes in the shop ive ever seen that came with one. maybe it will make me get my oil changed more regularly, which will probably be good for my fork anyway. do those lizard skins fit on without disassembly? cause no way in hell am i taking this finicky fork apart. thanks. |
| those boots that you cut up work better than the lizard skins. | RVM Aug 11, 2002 10:11 PM | | the lizard skins are made of neoprene and are not exactly water proof like the original rubber boots. Might as well not even use those lizard skin shock boots.
And those Sids that you see w/out a boot are probably newer models that don't require them or the owners decided to do the same thing you did... |
| nah dude...i can tell the difference between SID models... | indicaM3 Aug 12, 2002 10:35 AM | | im not dumb. my sid was the only one of its vintage i had ever seen with boots, so i said F it. |
| re: should i remove boots from my 98 SID? | sparklenuts Aug 14, 2002 5:30 AM | | i have a friend with a sweet 98 sid seized up and ruined in his basement. He cut his boots off too. The xxx seal was the fix. all rock shox have wipers, some are meant to keep oil in, not dirt out. try to go to the angryasian.com web site and get the aftermarket wipers. they work and you won't ruin your fork. |
