Duke XC fit on 2001 Rockhopper Compcooper999

Hey all-

I just bought a Duke XC for my Rockhopper Comp (2001 model), which came with a Judy C. The travel for both the Duke XC and the Judy C is 80 mm, but I noticed that when I was eyeballing the length of each of the forks by holding them together (the Judy still being on the bike), the distance between the crown and the bottom of the dropouts on the Duke is less than that of the Judy, by as much as an inch and a half. Could this be because I haven't pumped up the Duke yet to set sag, or is it natural (I ordered it through pricepoint, and I assume that the fork came set up properly, though might have to have the sag tweaked)?

My question is, is this a problem when it comes to compatibility? If it works, that's cool, I'd enjoy riding with the lower profile, but I don't want to go ahead and install the new fork/cut the steering tube to length if it's going to be a problem.

All replies are welcome and requested!

That the fork is properly set up right out of the box. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. From the sound of it your Duke doesn't have air in it. At least not enough to fully extend the fork! The Duke and the Judy are very close to the same size in axle to crown length. It is CERTAINLY NOT NORMAL to have an inch and a half difference in length between the two, a few milimeters perhaps, but not an inch and a half. Which leads me to believe that the air chambers in the Duke are not fully or properly inflated. Go to your LBS and buy a shock pump or your going to have a rude awakening once you get that Duke installed. EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING depends on proper set up when it comes to air forks, and the Duke is no exception. NO air fork comes from the factory set up and ready to ride. The amount of air pressure required in the fork is DIRECTLY related to your weight. Your Duke should fit your Rockhopper no problem. The fork is not yet properly set up.

your not sure than to screw something up. You didn't wuss out, you just decided to play it safe. Nothing wrong with that. And it can save you some big bucks in the long run if you're not sure what you're doing.
