Increasing travel on '02 SID SL???(1 post)

Increasing travel on '02 SID SL???Waide
Oct 17, 2002 9:59 AM
I recently purchased an '02 FSR XC Pro that came with a SID SL fork. Currently the fork seems to be set at 63mm travel. I am interested in adjusting the travel to 80mm. I understand that this operation requires either a trip to the shop or a purchase of special tools. Before I go that far, I would like to get some information from others who have changed the travel on their SIDs.

1. Will this increase in travel result in a flexier fork?

2. Will this increase in travel noticeably affect the geometry of the bike? If so, can I compensate by lowering my handlebars?

3. Will there be any other negative side effects? (faster bushing wear, etc.)

I have already put standard 3 degree bend flat bars on the bike and I have lowered them by moving the headset spacers to the top of the stem. I am considering getting a new stem to lower them a little more and thus keep the front wheel on the ground better in steep climbs.

Finally I am considering changing the rear travel on the bike from 90mm to 75mm to make the rear end a little less active.
