I'm not really diggin' my Fox Forx Vanilla R ...dogbert

On medium and big hits, the Vanilla R is fine. But on repeated small-hit, washboard-type terrain, it feels harsh, or at least more harsh than my old Marzocchi Z1 MCR.

Ridden it for about 2 months, so it should be nice and broken in by now. I'm running the recommended sag (20-25%) and getting full travel, so the setup/springs are ok. I have the rebound damping more towards the quick side, so I don't think it's from the fork packing down.

It definitely has its good points, but the first third to half of its travel hasn't been one of them. Have I just been spoiled by my past Marzocchis (and rationalizing the purchase of an '03 Z1 FR)?

Any suggestions/comments?

The fork is awesome on drops and big hits, but you are right, on stutter bumps it is not that great. Have you felt any looseness in the front that feels like the headset is loose? You can lift the fork up and feel looseness also. It is safe but annoying. I'm sending it back to Fox when the weather turns really cruddy here.
speed up the rebound 1 or 2 clicksfrank

I usually find that one click faster on the rebound will take care of that problem. Remember also that tire size and pressure affect the ride quality on the small washboard type bumps.
I've found the same thingkristian

Alternatively, it bobs less when climbing than the Marzocchis that I'm used to. I love the stiffness and it feels great on medium to large hits--just not as good as the zokes on washerboard.

Frank raises an interesting point above though, that bike has a 2.1 Specialized XC tire and my others have fatter tires with DH casings...

Ive noticed this too and while 1 or 2 clicks seemed to help on the small stuff it makes a noticeable difference on the med/big stuff (too fast). Ive tried 5wt oil and different springs/settings but its still not what I really want. So coming from another XCE owner Im looking at a Zokes too, but probly a 02 Atom or 02 Z1. Does anyone know if the 02 Z1 can be reduced to 4"? Also seems like I read a thread a few months ago where a Fox owner said after about 600 miles the the fork became much better but Im not sure.

The 2002 Fox forx were a bit heavier damped in compression than a Marzocchi Z-1 is, I have quite a problem with my hands being totally abused from years of biking and tennis, so I am trying out some modified parts to convert my 2002 Fox to the lighter compression feel that the 2003 forx now have, I will post back in a week or so as to how this "mod" works on the trail.
And on the 03 Marzocchi Z-1 FR, I just had one in my hands today, and on my scale it was 5.4 pounds uncut, my Fox is more than a full pound lighter. The 03 Z-1 FR is way bigger burlier looking than some dual crown forks and looks like the lowers go on a 35mm stancioned fork, in a cat fight, the Z-1 FR should kill a Boxxer in a heartbeat!!!!!
My RLC gets scared stiff by stutter bumps...Tscheezy

like others here have noted. Sort of a high speed compression spike. That shouldn't kick in until the 2nd half of the travel. I don't mind the action terribly, but it is good to know that they recognized it and fixed it. That along with a slow speed compression adjuster that didn't do anything that I could discerne were my only 2 gripes with an otherwise excellent fork (oh, yeah, and they are kind of a pain to work on). Since the fork is hardly changed this year, maybe there is an aftermarket revalve possible?

I read that they are changing the compression vaulving on the 03 forks to adress this. Doesn't help us 02 guys out much, but what can you do?
'03 damper much smoother on this stuffreed

I got my '02 forx float rl serviced by Fox (after 150 hours of use and no maintenance I figured it was time to send it in) and they stoked me with an '03 damper. I loved my forx before (check my 2 reviews of it) but I've got to say the '03 damper is even smoother- especially on high-speed big hits and washboard stuff (I have more than 30 hours on the new damper). The '03 damper has been re-worked w/ more flow (my layman's expl) and can be added to the '02 forx (no idea what this involves or availability- as I mentioned I sent the fork in to Fox). I'm sure if you call them, or talk to your dealer they can give you the rundown on what an upgrade would cost- I'm sure it can't be anything close to a new fork. I had a coil marzocchi (which I loved) two forks prior to the forx and I'd say there's no comparison to how smooth the forx is in the stutters now- even being an air fork.

Was there something performing wrong with your fork that caused you to send it in for service, or was it just for maintenance?

Did Fox find a problem with your '02 damper that made them decide to swap it for an '03, or were they just feeling generous?
details here...reed

There was nothing wrong with my fork at all- I had finished the racing season tallied up the hours and realized that after 150 hours (1500+ miles) of use I should do something to my fork (the manual suggests major service much, much earlier). Since I'm close to Fox it was as easy to send it in as it was to take it to a shop- I figured the service would be better. I was right- both sending stuff into Fox and at races I've had nothing but outstanding service from Fox. My damper was fine, they were just being really nice and dropped in an '03 damper. They mentioned the new dampers were plug-and-play with the '02 forx. As I mentioned previously, I'm very happy with the '03 damper- I loved the forx as it came when I got it, I love it even more now.
How much did it cost you?Nat

Or are they an equipment sponsor or something?
