100mm fork on NRS(6 posts)

100mm fork on NRSJACO
Oct 20, 2002 2:03 PM
since switching frames is not a possibility right now i was wondering if switching the fork on my NRS from an 80mm to a 100mm to offer more control and comfort that comes with the extra travel is a good idea for a bike designed around an 80 fork? anybody out there tried this? what i dont want is to affect steering and the front wheel lifting when going uphill.
would this switch improve or diminish riding performance? thanks
105mm X-Vert on mine, but again...næstep

...I can't offer a before/after comparison because I parted out the OEM fork before ever riding it.

I can tell you that you'll have to lower bar height about an inch to compensate. I did this through a stem swap, but you may be able to reduce your spacer stack or switch from a riser to flat (or any combination of those) to achieve the same.

Bike still climbs great as far as I'm concerned, descends like a champ and the X-Vert Air simply rocks in all conditions.

I could have sworn I spotted a 100mm fork on an NRS I spied in a local shop last week. I can't remember which model (or year) it was, I just recall a blue fork with gold colored stanchions. Maybe you can find one of these to demo first to address any specific concerns you have.

I OWN AN NRS AIR. I SWITCHED FROM A 3" TRAVEL SID TO A 4" TRAVEL MARZOCHI. TWO THINGS CHANGED. THE BIKE IS VERY LIGHT IN THE FRONT NOW AND IS DIFICULT TO STEER UNDER POWER OR WHEN CLIMBING .ALSO THE STEERING IS SLIGHTLY SLOWER. THE BIKE WORKS FINE ON ALL BUT THE MOST DIFICULT TRAILS. I ALSO OWN AN NRS 2 WICH COMES WITH A MANITOU BLACK 80 - 100 ADJUSTABLE. I'M JUST STARTING TO EXPERAMENT WITH THE SETTINGS. I CAN CONTACT YOU LATER ON THE RESULTS. A LOWWER STEM WILL HELP THE LIGHT FRONT END PROBLEM, BUT COULD CAUSE DISCOMFORT. rmerren@chartermi.net

i also have a zochi and would never get rock shox but some 100mm forks are taller than others and apparently zocchis are on the tall side. this is what Titus cycles has to say about installing 100mm forks on the Racer X:
Q: Can I run a 100mm travel fork on the Racer-X?
A: Although the geometry chart for the Racer-X is based on an 80mm travel fork, you can run a 100mm travel Air fork on the Racer-X. Using a 100mm travel fork with a short axle to crown height, the head and seat angle will be 1.25 degrees slacker. On a medium Racer-X frame, the head angle will change from 71.5 degrees to 70.25 degrees. This will result in a ride that is a little more stable and forgiving. The down side is that the frame will lose a little of its overall agility. We do not recommend the use of any coil spring 100mm travel fork or anything with a tall axle to crown height. A coil spring fork will bob on climbs and will not match up well with the feel of the rear suspension. Taller forks will slacken the head and seat angle too much, resulting in poor handling. If you would like to run a 100mm travel Air fork on your Racer-X, we would recommend a RockShox Duke SL, Fox Float 100, or Manitou Black Elite Air 100. We would not recommend the Marzocchi Marathon 100 or RockShox Psylo Race 100. Both of these forks are too tall.

MY FRIEND HAS A STOCK NRS WITH A SID. TODAY I MEASURED FROM THE TOP OF THE CROWN TO THE CENTER OF THE AXLE, IT IS 17.5" MY NRS HAS A 4" TRAVEL MARZOCHI, THE MEASUREMENT IS 19". THE DIFF. IS 1" AFTER ALLOWING FOR THE EXTRA 1/2" OF SAG THAT I RUN. THE SURPRISING THING IS THAT MY BIKE HANDLES FINE ON EVERYTHING BUT TURNS THAT ARE EXTREMELY TIGHT. RM
Tried this with a Fox Forx Float 100...Jaak

and did not like it. I have since changed the travel on the fox to 80 and it is much better. Too slow and tough for tight turns at 100. Did not notice too much while climbing and was nice descending but not even close to worth the trade off. Keep it at 80 or get a diff bike.
