| '02 junior T clunking JrT | OTB Oct 21, 2002 8:29 AM | | My '02 Junior T went south on me on a rather boring XC ride yesterday. During the high frequency washboard/stuttery type stuff the fork would CLUNK halfway through it's stroke and would just bounce through the bumps instead of absorb them. When bouncing around in the parking lot at the end of the ride, I could not repeat the clunk. It only does it during high speed stuff like riding down a stair case or something. When compressing the fork in the parking lot, I did notice a "tick" halway through the compression. The bushings have no slop, and the rebound appears to be normal when I compress and let go.
Another thing I noticed is the difficulty in removing the wipers. are they glued on or something? I could not pry them off with a thin, wide screwdriver like other forks.
Any advice would be appreciated.

The 'tick' sound may not mean anything, most coil forks make that sound (spring contact). You may have a bad valve in there, so download the manual and tear down the fork (dont remove the seals! the manual isnt always to clear). The valving is located inside the top tube at the end, where you'll need to remove a snap ring to liberate the assembly. There will be a small ring inside, check that its not broken.
If everything in the fork looks fine, refill the fork to the proper oil height and test again. |
| How 'bout the Jr.T spike? | TNC Oct 21, 2002 4:28 PM | | His description of the suspension action on the stairs sounded a lot like the compression spike these forks usually have. The clunk could just be the rest of the bike reacting to this harsh bottom-out. Just seemed like a possibility. |
| ahh, had the opposite understanding... | zedro Oct 21, 2002 5:37 PM | | when he said 'bounced alot', was thinking of an un-damped pogo-ing, but i guess your interpertation sounds more realistic.
Alls well then, crappy dampers. Maybe try lighter oil (5wt), if not then drill-drill-drill... |
