Cloud 9 vs AD 12(9 posts)

Cloud 9 vs AD 12JACO
Oct 21, 2002 1:03 PM
im just about to dish out the money for a new shock for my nrs but am not sure if i should get the cloud 9 or the ad12. is the only difference between the two the semi lockout on the 9? or is the 9 more adjustable and also more plush? its $50 extra but it would be worth it if there are major differences. let me know if you have any idea. thanks

the semi lockout on the 9 is nice. you have some suspension but it is almost like a hardtail. i like it.

I'M CONSIDERING THE SAME CHANGE. MY MAIN CONCERN IS WILL IT MAKE FOR A MORE PLUSH RIDE. WILL YOU LET ME KNOW HOW IT WORKS OUT? I'VE ALSO CONSIDERED A EURO FRAME, IT HAS A SECOND POSITION FOR THE SHOCK.AS OF NOW I'M WAITING TILL I TALK TO SOMEONE THAT HAS RIDDEN ONE. RANDY FROM MI. rmerren@chartermi.net

its gonna take about a week till i get it overseas and have the chance to try it out, but sure ill let you know how the C9 does on my nrs. i have to admit im a little worried about the shock not having the pos/neg chambers like the sid since the double chamber concept was i believe, designed for the nrs or the nrs designed around the concept. ill just have to wait and see since the C9 is suposed to be great on the nrs. gotta have patience....
new to cane creek? it DOES have a negative chamber...TC

The cane creek and fox float both have negative chambers like the Sid. the difference is that you have no ability to set the pressure on the negative chamber, it gets set automatically by the positive chamber pressure. from cane creek's shock FAQ:

-People say air shocks have a lot of stiction. How does Cane Creek address this?
The AD shock is a patented design that came up with a new way of dealing with air springs and stiction. Compared to any rear shock, the AD-12 and AD-5 actually have very low stiction. Stiction is detrimental on small bumps and the initial phase of travel. But the AD-12 and AD-5 use an air negative spring, keeping the shock highly supple and responsive to small bumps. Cane Creek developed the air negative spring for the original AD shock. It's been our design for four years, and now it is quite common (and imitated) on other lightweight air shocks.

definately new to cane creek! i am VERY happy to hear its got a negative chamber. this means its going to mimic the sid but do a much better job at it from what i hear. the bottom line is i want my nrs to maintain the no bob status with a better ride and more consistent shock thats serviceable but hopefully wont give me any trouble anytime soon. so there you go...

I just got back from a ride-probably my 20th with the Cloud 9 on my NRS1, and it sooo much better than the Sid XC. I changed it out partly based on comments from this board (TC, et. al.) It takes some adjusting to get it right--but since you own an NRS you are used to that. My bike flattens out the trail while still have ltlle to no bob while pedaling. I have notice that when I pedal lightly and slowly on flat surfaces, I get a little bob, but fear not, when you stomp on the pedals or drive up a hill, the bike is as efficient as ever. I went with the cloud nie as opposed to the ad12 and felt as though I wasted the extra $50 until yesterday, when I popped out of the woods (after getting lost) onto a road and had a 6 mile ride on pavement back to the car. Locked out the shock and pedaled back. Good luck!
