| front shocks for Trek 930 single track | mckinleyhill Jan 8, 2003 7:16 AM | | I have an old Trek 930 with no suspension. I want to put something on it without spending too much. The stock fork has a 1 1/8 threaded steerer tube that's 137 mm long with two spacer washers. I think I could get away with a 135 mm tube if I take out one of the washers. It appears that one of the old Rock Shox Quad 5 forks comes with 135 mm threaded tube. I know that's not a high quality fork, but I'm not looking for the best, just better than nothing. Are there alternatives that would be a direct swap like the Quad 5? I don't want to convert to threadless, so I can keep the stock stem. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks. |
| Don't bother with the Quad 5 | kristian Jan 8, 2003 9:08 AM | | That was a crappy fork to begin with and anything out there today is going to have elastometers that are hard as rocks (single cellular eleastometers get stiffer with age). You can get lots of decent threadless forks for cheap if you get one that is a year or two old. Just about anything will blow the Quad away in terms of performance. You can get a decent aheadset for less than $30 and you can find great deals on stems if you look around.
I guarentee you that if you get the Quad, you will want to upgrade it within a year. Save your self the hassle and expense--get something better from the get go. |
