| Pushest air 80 mm travel fork?? | Bud M. Jan 8, 2003 3:52 PM | | I've been through fork hell for the last few months. On my Smoothie I've tried a RS 2003 SID Team, a RS 2003 SID Race and a RS 2000 SID SL and I'm not happy with any of them. I'm experienced with setting up forks and have tried all the permutations of + - psi, damping etc. I love racing these forks but not for epic recreational rides -- they just beat me up a little too much (I'm an ole phart with a bad back). So I want an air fork that is ultra plush that I can swap out with my RS Race when I want a plush ride - like now between race seasons. One consideration would be a RS Sid XC -- I've got a SID 100 on my trail bike and I like the coil negative spring as it seems very supple on the small stuff....but I don't want to put a 100mm travel fork on the Smoothie. So, you Zoke and Fox fans what do you recommend??
Thanks for any help. |
| I'd suggest an 02 marathon | Shylock Jan 8, 2003 6:20 PM | | I've had mine for almost a year now, and while it took a bit of fiddling to get the oil level and presure settings the way I liked them, the fork is wonderfully plush. And it tracks beautifully.
Setting it up can be a pain. I'm running 90cc/60cc with 20 psi /60 psi(negative). that's a big departure from the factory recommendations, and I don't know of anyone who would suggest it for 165-170 pound guy like me. I wouldn't be surprised if I could get the same feel out of the fork via different oil levels and air pressures.
that ability to mess around until you get your favorite setting is what I find to be the fork's strongest suit and it's why I'll probably not be inclinced to upgrade for some time.
The only thing I don't like is the limited rebound adjustability, but screwing around with oil levels and different combos of positive and negative settings has yileded the rebound traits I like . I 've often run the negative chamber as much as 15 psi higher than recommended (Zoke recommends a 3:1 ratio of negative to positive) which shortens the stroke of the fork, thus eliminating some of the travel, but that settup does make for a cushy ride over the little stuff.
Bottom line: A good fork out of the box, a great fork once you fiddle with it. The question is, "do you like fiddling with things?"

| Hey Shylock ... | Mycroft Jan 9, 2003 6:21 AM | | Tried to send you a couple of emails, but got delayed delivery notices for both from your email address. Did any of them get through??
BTW my email is tc_khoo@hotmail.com if you'd like to get in touch with me off-line. Would appreciate knowing if my messages got through. Thanks. |
| Current factory recommendations on Marathon... | dreampath Jan 9, 2003 1:33 PM | | actually are very close to what you are running, at least in regards to oil height. I asked them last week, and they recommended 95cc/60cc. I highly "second" the Marathon '02 suggestion by the way. |
