Vanilla or Talas? Some perspective needed...(9 posts)

Vanilla or Talas? Some perspective needed...Festively Plump

I am stepping up to a fork upgrade and am very interested in Fox Forx I have been drooling over a Vanilla but recently started to think about the Talas as well here is all the pertinent information that I feel is important to this decision- if you were in shoes, what would you do?

I ride a steel hardtail
I ride fairly rocky and technical trails for the area
The bike is designed for 80mm but I'm looking to use up to 100mm
I weigh 215'ish w/o gear so I'm nervous abit about air forks (never owned one)
What I like about the Talas external travel adjustment but it is $$$$
Questions- Will my weight impact the performance of the air fork?
Will I ever after the first week adjust travel on the fly? Probably not on a regular basis but on a few weekend rides it might be nice to ride the XC Trails at 80mm come to the bomber downhill and extend the travel. Does the external travel adjustment warrent such a premium in cost? I certainly do not want to sacrafice overall performance simply for theis feature.

Clearly either fork is a luxury item, but my sense is if I am shelling out the $$$ for a Vanilla would it be better to save for a few more months and get the Talas.

Thanks

I am 240# and have a Fox Float RLC on my XC bike. It has well over 500 miles on it last year with no problems. If your not going to use the 125mm travel then I would suggest getting the Float 100 RLC. You can change the travel in it to 80mm if you want, it takes about 10 min start to finish.

Thanks for the perspective. Having never owned a Air Fork my "perspective" are very flexy Sid's that blow seals and maintenance nightmares...

Thanks!

I've got a "friend" who's in the same situation as you. Same size, same steel hardtail for 80mm....he's got a Talas for about the last month.

He runs it at about 90mm, and loves it. Best fork he's ever owned. Better than 2003 Float 100RLC and 2003 Vanilla RLC he owns too.

Get the talas if you're big, burly, and like to ride hard. Apparently, it is a great fork with great damping.

Wow you, er I mean, "your friend" has a nice arsenal of forks there!

Quick question- I know that Fox claims that how you set up the fork initially (let's say a little stiff on the compression at 85mm) and you then bump it up to 100mm that the compression retains the exact same level of stiffness that it was at 80mm? Even if it does, is that a good thing? I mean having never ridden with a 100mm fork, I hazard to guess that you would set the intial sag to be a little deeper than it was at 80mm.

And hey, "I'm not fat- I'm a Clydesdale!" ;-)
It is a good thing.Zonic Man

You get the same settings regardless of where the fork is set. It's perfect, as you get the same "feel"....as for sag, well, the sag is set...the recommended setting is the same from fox in the 80 and 100mm float models.

Sounds like your friend is one of the lucky few who have actually gotten a 2003 Fox Fork.

I have been waiting for a Talas since September.

How did he manage to get the forks?
He has friends. (nm)Zonic Man

Zonic,

Where's your review dude? Back in December you posted you had a Talas on your bike and would post a review of it after a weekends ride... Did I miss your review? I've been dying for information on the fork (my dealer has offered to swap the Psylo SL that came on my Enduro with the Talas that was "supposed" to come on it when I ordered it).

Also, BTW, in another post, when I said the Talas weren't shipping, you said "bullcrap". I assume that to mean that you were able to just buy yours... Did you get a preproduction unit from "friends"?

Thanks!

...Jim
