| Marzocchi 2001 Z3 - VS - 2003 MX Comp? | Spamula Jan 9, 2003 12:26 PM | | I am trying to decide between buying one of two new forks for my sweety-balls black Ellsworth Isis.
I am 145lbs, ride a lot of hard/tight XC, uphill logging roads, and 4 foot drops.
Which of these forks would be ideal? New '01 Z3 or '03 MX Comp?
Thanks for your help!

| Z1 not a good option for this rider. Suntour internals?? No Way. | S-Works Jan 10, 2003 9:31 PM | | I've never heard that before. Z1's got way too much travel for the riding Spamula is describing.
Anyway, Z3 is a very good fork. Good all round trail riding fork. I have one on my Tracer and love it.
Another option may be an 02 MXR. You still get the external compression and rebound. The new monolite sliders, but the SSVF valving system to the Z3's SSV. I think the 02 MXR is basically a Z3 with the newer sliders and damping, and those can be had for two and half bills.

Both are coil, Z3 can be converted to air if you want. The MX Comp has the monolite sliders which are supposed to be lighter. The published weight of the MX Comp is 4.46lbs. I weighed my Z3 after I cut the steerer and it was 4.14lbs. Travel for the MX comp is 85mm. Z3 can be 80 or 100mm.
Just after I got my Z3, I got all starry eyed at the Fox forx, bought a Vanilla R 100. Rode it a few months, took it off to service it. Put the Z3 on, and rode the next day. I was shocked. The Z3 far outperformed the Forx vanilla, espicially in small stutter bumps, I felt they were equally as stiff, and I think the Z3 is a bit more plush.
Bottom line for me is the Z3 100 coil is helluva fork, and I don't think you can go wrong with it. Plus it's only two bills at pricepoint right now.
Good Luck. |
| Thanks! Any Other Thoughts? | Spamula Jan 10, 2003 7:01 AM | | Thank you's to both of you for the replys. It's nice to hear some solid reasons either way.
Anybody else have any thoughts or experience with the Z.3 2001? |
| Thanks! Any Other Thoughts? | kap Jan 11, 2003 2:14 AM | | Whats up. I have a 01 z-3 air and just put on my 03 mx comp-eta. Must say for 240.00 the mx comp is dope. The eta lock-out with 30mm of travel could not work better. I took a chance and spent 40 more bucks bucks and it was worth it.The z-3 works great, but if you do a lot of tech. climbs get the mx comp-eta it is worth it. Ride on. |
