about the existing star nut? Just pound it down into the steerer tube so the Conix 'nut' can have enough room?
Really don't need a Conix here — 'hard' part is done...næstep

The Conix gets around having to install a star nut in the steerer. If you've got a star nut in there that you can use, I'd put the Conix in the drawer and get a top cap and bolt from the LBS.

If you're intent on using the Conix, you can pound the star nut down further or carefully drill it out.
