| Romic ti spring--what weight? | timmyb Mar 17, 2003 5:55 AM | | I have a Turner 5 Spot on order, and am replacing the stock spring with a ti spring from Romic. I weigh 185 lbs. and plan to use the bike for aggressive trails riding, with modest jumping. Does anyone know the optimal spring weight I should use? Thanks. |
| re: Romic ti spring--what weight? | DGC Mar 17, 2003 11:19 AM | | For you would be about a 550 pound spring. However, the Ti is not made in a 550. The biggest or highest spring rate the Romic Titanium spring is made in for that 5 Spot (2 inch stroke) is a 500 which will work with some preload and a few clicks of compression damping though. Infact you get to use the compression damper a bit more this way and that is what Romic seems to want more people to do. I am 170 pounds and run the Romic and a 500 spring on my Turner and I dont really run any preload, so you should be just fine on the same 500 pound spring. If your concerned at all about it, just run the steel spring with a 550 pound spring. The claimed weight difference between the Ti and steel spring is roughly 1/2 the weight of the steel one. My guess is about 6-7 ounces, but until I get my Ti coil I wont know for sure. Romic said today those 500's are on the way to them and they will have them likely the next few days. |
| forgot something...... | DGC Mar 17, 2003 11:24 AM | | The highest rate the spring is made in for the Turner 5 Spot which uses a 2 inch stroke is a 500, I dunno about the other stroke lengths vs. rate. |

| Thanks | timmyb Mar 17, 2003 12:22 PM | | Thanks DGC. This confirms what Turner and Romic both told me. Sent you an email at the shop--hope you get it. |
| What weight for a 150 pounder | Dodo Mar 17, 2003 6:43 PM | | the Turner is coming (for me) next year but I am just curious. I am 150 pounds will I need a 450? Does it comes in Titanium? |
| What weight for a 150 pounder | DGC Mar 17, 2003 7:42 PM | | no 450 pound Titanium spring at this time, but if your waiting til next year then maybe by then it might exist. are you getting a 5 Spot? If so then for real aggressive riding prolly the 500 would work or if you want a more plush ride, run a 400. I have a 400 spring in my stash of springs around, and ran it a few times with 3-3.5 turns of preload and about 5-6 clicks of compression damping from full soft and it worked fine. Though Romic says its just fine and reccomended to me to run that much preload for a 2 inch stroke shock and a 400 x 2.25 spring, It feels better to me with a 500 pound spring, but remember I am at least 20 pounds heavier than you. I am not sure weather they make a 450 pound spring for a 2 inch stroke shock, but I can certainly find out on this Wednesday when I need to call them again.
They set me up on a 400 pound spring to test out vs. the 500 spring and that was 1 year ago and said at that time they had no 450 pound springs for my bike. |
| Yes, a 5 spot probably next spring | Dodo Mar 18, 2003 7:50 AM | | I am still happy with my GT STS (which has indeed 4.75" of rear) but next year the frame will be 7 year old and it might be time to change it. It sounds like that at my weight a 400 would be optimal with a 450 as an option. If you run the 500 with no preload it would be a bit too stiff at my weight.
The 5-spot seems the ideal bike for what I do, the alternative is the Blur but I am not too impressed with its climbing ability ...
Thank you for the info on the springs |
