| What the heck happened to my Fox fork? | The Squeaky Wheel May 18, 2003 4:06 PM | | Yesterday my 1.5 year old Fox Float fork is working fine. Today it's making an odd noise during compression. First time I've had any problems. Sounds like a soft "whoosh." and there's also a vibration which can be felt through the handlebars. To me it sounds like rubber rubbing against metal. The fork still seems to be working perfectly OK, but the noise & sensation are disconcerting.
I took the fork apart today including oil changes on both sides (even though it wasn't due) and popping up the wipers and cleaning off below. Everything looks fine and after reassembly the noise is still there. I paid close attention to the various O-rings & couldn't find any damage. I can't really tell which side it's coming from. I even took my stethoscope to the fork but the sound is transmitting equally to both sides through the arch.
I did take a fall or two yesterday, but nothing to hard or unusual.
My next step is to call Fox, but I fear the dreaded "send it in & we'll check it out" which will leave me fork-less for at least 2 weeks.
Could I somehow have kinked a bushing which is not accessible? I'm out of ideas.
Any help would be much appreciated.

| Follow up from Fox.... | The Squeaky Wheel May 19, 2003 2:54 PM | | Gauging by the overwhelming number of replies here, I wasn't too surprised to find that Fox also little to offer.
Their advice...change the oil on both sides. Did that already.
Pull up the wipers and clean them. Did that already.
Put a dab of Slick Honey under the wieprs. Hadn't done that, but did it today and it didn't make a difference.
Since the fork seems to be working fine they recommend that I just ride it for now and send it back at my convenience. But that sound & vibration is driving me batty.
I'm thinking it's coming from the damper side (right). When I turn the rebound to max slow the sound disappears and it definitely gets more prounced as I speed up the rebound. I've also determined that it only occurs during compression, not rebound and only when it compresses quickly.
Oh well.

| I say ride it ,but bring it back to jersey | Ridethebike May 21, 2003 6:01 PM | | Hey Squeak
It's me dirtydave, got a new name here.
I've been riding like crazy, although not with
the the old crew. Them guys have been sporadic.
Any plans for an epic this year?
Jim Thorpe was the last road trip for me. I heard they
closed some trail there. Dd. |
| I'll just wear ear plugs.... | The Squeaky Wheel May 21, 2003 10:26 PM | | Hey DD. Why the name change? Didn't want people to think you were into internet porn (not that there's anything wrong with that).
The shock's working fine but the noise is driving me nuts. I'm convinced it's from the damper (right) side. I'm thinking it's either the sound of the wiper rubbing on the stanchion or maybe a valve in the damper is malfunctioning partially. THe season up here is just too short for me to lose it to Fox for a week or two so I"ll gut it out until either it breaks or during winter (which isn't too far off when you live in VT).
Doubt I'll be making any road trips now that I've got 2 kiddies. But there's lots of big hills up here.
