| How to solve cluncking noise from Fox forks... | Anders May 20, 2003 8:45 AM | | I have had the same problem for a while and found the answer on a Norwegian site. Norwegian is a bit like Danish, so I will translate. You can just follow the pictures on the link:

The clunck is there because the holes where the srews that holds the springs, that make the rebound dial click are, is sucking air down in the top af the damper. This mean that you don't have any damping in the first stroke of the fork, and then when you hit the oil because of the added pressure, it makes this sound. To solve it you just unscrew the two bolts and wrap some teflontape around the streads, and put them in again. Look out for the springs. Assemble it again, turn the damping down, cycle the fork some time, and adjust the rebound again, then it should be fixed. Worked for me, but might not work for others. |

The article seems to refer to Fox Vanilla forks only. do you think the TALAS (air fork) may be fixed the same way? thanks,

| re: How to solve cluncking noise from Fox forks... | J.S. May 20, 2003 10:06 AM | | The right side slider internals should the same as a Float, but please call Fox to verify. TALAS uses a different air spring design in the left fork leg, but it is still part of the Float line, so the right side damper assembly should be the same. Please correct me if this is in error. =)
Ventanarama, any insights into this? |
| Yes, I'm almost sure that they use the same damper on all... | Anders May 20, 2003 11:31 AM | | their forks with small changes due to different travel. |
| re: How to solve cluncking noise from Fox forks... | DGC May 20, 2003 7:38 PM | | I have tried to use plumbers putty that Fox reccomended, no luck, what I have found with forks coming through the store is the plastic spacers do more to cause the noise, as does the compression rod knocking the stancion leg/end cap area more than anything. What they describe here is exactly what the Fox service manager described to me, ive tried a road innner tube cut to fit the spacers, and some other tricks which help etc. No big deal about the noise while riding, unless there is not enough oil in the fork and it is not bled of air correctly. Most of the forks I've delt with have very little if any noise. Dunno what others are finding out though. |
| re: How to solve cluncking noise from Fox forks... | James May 21, 2003 10:05 AM | | Fox describe the noise as a "loose headset feel" while riding over small bumps. The teflon tape or plumbers putty fixes the problem, if not you may ahave something else going on. It worked for me, just don't ask about my creaking left stantion, fork number 4 is on its way. |
