| Play in Marz. year 2000 Z2Atom 80 | Fedup May 22, 2003 12:35 PM | | Took my fork into the local Authorized repair shop. It came out with some play at the top...if you lift up on the handlebar there is a small amount of "travel" WHY? What can I do. Shop guy says this is normal, I say B.S. |
| i also have a z2 atom 80... | kam May 22, 2003 3:36 PM | | and am currently servicing it. i bought a ecc lock-out kit, new enduro wipers/seals and some oil and even painted the lowers. i may buy new bushings as well(even though i don't think it needs it, but it has a ton of miles and it wouldn't hurt to do it now).
it's a pretty easy fork to take apart and see if any parts were left out. how much "unsprung" travel does your fork have? i do think you shop is b.s.-ing though, that it not normal for any fork...heck, not even one from target. make sure your headset/stem is not loose first.
i think either the shop mechanic either forgot to;
install the small (bottom out?)springs
or the preload spring if you are running heavy spring(heavy springs are shorter than both light and medium springs)
or maybe even the small plastic spacers that go between the springs and top cap assembly.
hope this helps...may be someone here has a better idea of what's going on. |
| I had a 1998 atom bomb | martin May 23, 2003 6:29 AM | | and it had this small amount of travel in the forks because of a tiny wee negative spring located below the damping cartridge, something to do with allowing the fork to move downwards to help it track. Could be something to do with that, if it is just a "clunk" down rather than a smooth spring operated movement then I'd say the shop has forgotten to tighten or install something. Saying that, if you have instructions you can probably check it on your own, my forks were a piece of p*ss to strip down, service and rebuild. Hope this helps. |
| agree w/ kam | roo May 23, 2003 11:14 AM | | possible lack of the lowest 2 springs (used to prevent bottoming out when pulling up hard) or other missing parts/botched reassembly.. |
