| Will a Marz MXPro screw up a Heckler geometry? | jackcfk Jul 31, 2003 1:18 AM | | Hi,
Planning to buy a Marzocchi MXPro ETA with a Santa Cruz 03 Heckler for mostly trail riding and some light freeride.
Anyone using the combo above? Will the 100mm travel screw up the Heckler geometry? |
| Now that's unusual, most people ask about.... | Squash Jul 31, 2003 3:39 AM | | a fork that has more travel than their bike is designed to handle. Your asking about less. Kind of refreshing I guess. Since the geometry of the bike is designed for 5" of travel the effects will be just the opposite of having too long of a fork. The handling will be slightly quicker than intended, possibly to the point of being quite twitchy and unpleasant to ride or hard to control. The weight bias of the bike will shift forward and with the front end lower the center of gravity for the rig will change a bit. With the lower front you'll also lower the bottom bracket height a bit which can result in more frequent encounters by the pedals with rocks etc. The bike will also be less stable at speed and while descending. With the weight shifted forward even that small amount you'll real have to get back behind the seat an low to keep the bike under control on descents. But climbing should be easier with the weight already shifted forward. How much will the bike be affected, pretty hard to say. You will notice some of the above at least. You'll be able to compensate to some extent by using more sag in the rear, but there are limits to that. The bike was designed to give optimum performance and handling with a 5" travel fork. I would stick with that if at all possible. Or at leas go with a fork with adjustable travel in the 100 to 130mm range. The choice is yours. There is a possibility that the bike will be to your liking with a 100mm fork but then the opposite is just as possible. All you can do is try, but it could be an expensive mistake.

| can shed some light | gomez75 Jul 31, 2003 9:53 AM | | i am using the fox talas on my heckler. in the 80mm setting it the angles are visibly steeper than on my xc hardtail. i only use this setting when riding on the road. on the trail i will use the 100mm setting when going uphill only when it is pretty steep or if the trail is pretty tame i will use this setting to just cruise. it does make the bike handle a little bit quicker. but in the 125mm setting the bike rides great and honestly i mostly just ride all the time in this setting. the bike handles great with the full 5 inches. the top tube is about an almost 2inches shorter than on my xc hardtail and even in the five inch mode it really isn't that much harder to cruise up hills. i think i notice the 5-6lbs more than the geometry. I was going to mount a fox 100rlc and santa cruz said it would mess up the geometry, so i went with the talas. the 100mm setting works fine but if you are looking for an affordable fork go with the manitou black with the 100mm- 120mm travel adjust. i think the 80mm that the eta would give you would just be too steep. |

| Thanks Guys!! getting Blur instead.. | jackcfk Jul 31, 2003 7:34 PM | | Appreciate your inputs guys. I think I've come to the decision to get the marz mx pro eta with Blur instead of the Heckler... Blur is able to handle some light downhill, frame is lighter so I'm cool with that. And the 100mm travel will be just right for the Blur. |
| Heckler is it!! gomez75, thx! | jackcfk Aug 8, 2003 3:21 AM | | Gomez,
Thanks for your inputs, I think I'm going with a Heckler and a TALAS or Vanilla RLC. Which do you recommend? The most I do are 5 ft drops.
Any comments on the 5th element?
Thanks for your help!! |
