Hi everyone!

I'm probably gonna get flamed big-time for this one. Here it goes. I was talking with a friend who rides snowmobiles ("snow-pigs") and motorbikes lots and the topic of shocks came up. He and a fellow colleague both agree that Fox shocks are good when new but are generally crap after a very short time. Then my friend start rattling off other manufacturers (none of which I can remember off hand), saying that they are rebuildable (by the home mechanic) and have much more life in them than a Fox.

My question is this. If the i-to-i distance is correctly matched for the bike in question, can a, say, snowmobile shock work on a bicycle? Cost is probably an issue. Or maybe not?! I dunno. Sure there are alternatives out there already like Romic, Manitou, Rock Shox (ewww), 5th Element; but what about shocks from different applications? What do you guys/gals think?

Hmmmmmm....

a bike called the CPC Patriot (now defunct) was purposely built around a Fox snowmobile shock, but it didnt work out all that well. No non-bike shock would work, you'll never find the right size, and even then it wont be valved right.

Anyways right now the Avalanche DHS and Stratos ElHefe are taken directly from motocross technology, as well as the up comming Fox Vanilla DH with SPV technology i believe (the current Vanillas are not based on any other Fox product).

Plus, if a shock is from a different application, its obviously not tuned for a mtbs specific needs.
