| OK Whats up with this AVA thingy? I got a Fox on my truth.. | Loose Screw Aug 1, 2003 6:19 PM | | I weigh 155 and when I set the sock at 140-145 the preload seems about right but I'm not even close to bottoming it out. Can you get more air volume with the AVA so you get more travel? I haven't been able to find any info. You can actually upgrade????
Any info please thanx |
| I have a Float AVA RL on my Superlight... | Ride Biker Aug 1, 2003 9:34 PM | | it allows you to change the air spring characteristics.
A larger air chamber will give you a more linear type spring, one that has the same rate through it's travel, similar to a coil spring, giving better suspension performance in the smaller, slower stuff.
A smaller air chamber makes the shock have a progressive spring, it "packs up" more as it goes through it's travel, a characteristic of air springs, keeping the shock from bottoming on the big hits, but a rougher ride at slower speed.
I don't think you will get more travel, but with a larger air chamber you will use more of the travel more of the time.
I don't know anything about an upgrade kit for non-AVA floats, I have never looked. |

| So now were do I find info and who sells the upgrade??Thanx.. nm | Loose Screw Aug 2, 2003 8:13 AM | | |
| From what ive read on this board | Jrm Aug 3, 2003 6:57 AM | | The best bet is to talk to Fox. |
| they are available as an upgrade | Hammerheadbikes Aug 2, 2003 11:02 AM | | like the others said...
any shop can order them
price about 60 or so
I just ordered a few to try out
not one for your shock though..
you need to specify the shock size, truth=6.5x1.5
if you can't get your LBS to order one reasonable I can help |
| won't change small bump feel much, increases deep travel | derby Aug 3, 2003 8:11 AM | | The AVA can adjust a Float rear shock to have more air volume for a noticeably more gradual progressive (more linear) ramp up producing a deeper usable bottomout (using the same sag as the Float without AVA.)
With the AVA sleeve adjusted for maximum chamber size, it will take a couple psi more pressure to obtain the same sag as the AVA sleeve adjusted for minimum chamber size (to the same volume as non AVA sleeved Float).
If anything, smaller bump feel will be a touch more firm, but unlikely enough change to be noticeable. Medium and bigger bump feel will be noticeably smoother, with a more plush feel overall. With the AVA you would likely be able to adjust it to gain full usable travel without using more sag than you want.
For your lighter than average rider weight a Float with AVA, or Cane Creek AD-12, or Vanilla-RC (coil), or Stratos Helix (coil), or Risse Jupiter (coil), would likely be the ideal shocks to use for top performance on your Truth. The coil shocks would have an even more buttery feel than the air shocks. Be aware that the '04 Fox's will be platform compression damped and have some small amount of increased small bump harshness compared to the current Fox shocks, and could possibly be too firmly damped for your light weight on the Truth.
