Q about Bel Ray Fork Oil, and Oil Height/Changing Springs(9 posts)

Q about Bel Ray Fork Oil, and Oil Height/Changing SpringsTotal Newbie Please Help
Aug 4, 2003 2:36 PM
Hello all, I am a total newbie so please be kind.

I have three questions:

1.) Is Bel-Ray 10wt fork oil any good? I tried searching for reviews, but couldn't find anything. What are good fork oils?
2.) What is the stock oil height in the 2003 Marzocchi MX Comp (non ETA) fork? Would it be in my manual (which is lost for the time being)?
3.) I want to change the stock springs, and was wondering how hard it is, and what tools I will need. Also, instructions would be great.

Anyway, that's it, please help if you can, thank you:)

Good Oil, but you want 7.5wt

Good Question. Alot of people are having trouble with this. My advice is measure the height before you drain, and match with the new oil. This works well because you probably not get all the oil out of the damper.

Piece of cake. The springs pull out when you are changing oil anyway. It's a drop in change with the top caps off.

Good Luck,

hope this helps.

Hey Zeke, why would 10wt be bad? I weigh 220 lbs, and I heard 10wt is good for my weight range. Thank you for the info:)

~230lb rider here using xtra hvy springs (mountain speed).
I prefer a 1:1 mix of 7.5 & 10wt Silkolene, since I find the compression a bit harsh with straight 10wt. But, I'm still running a couple of '99 zokes, so this may not apply to your newer fork.
bel ray or just about any motorcycle fork will work just fine (maxima & silkolene seem to be favorites on the board here). FYI stock 'zoke oil is 7.5 wt golden spectro.

Be sure to cycle the damper to remove all old oil, and cycle damper when adding oil to remove air from damper.
Oil ht is measured with fork compressed and springs out.

Do a search here for you oil levels, there's been some discussion of late and I believe answers.
--> or give Marzocchi a call, cuz they rarely answer email but give good tech service on da phone.

Good luck,
Serge

Hi logbiter, thank you for the info. What do you mean cycle the damper though? Sorry, I am totally new, thanks again though:)

This means that you pull the damper out and push it back down into the legs. You'll understand when you have the fork open. If you don't do this, some of the old oil will be hiding in the damper and you won't get it all out.

Yes, you should be OK with 10wt at 220lbs. .....Zrkr

you can always change it if you don't like the damping. Go the 7.5wt or mix up you own like one of the above posts.

Good Luck, it really is not difficult to work on these forks.
